Law Firm Interviews

Just wondering what they are like, what type of questions do they ask you. If there are any proper responses to certain questions etc…

This totally depends on the type of firm and the school. Some firms are primarily looking for a personality match because they either hire everyone they can from your school or because you crossed a grade threshold. Other firms will focus on your ambitions, what kind of work you want to do, etc.

It’s always smart to know as much you can about the firm; they will often ask you what practice area you’re interested in, etc. Know what the firm’s specialties are, where its branch offices are, etc.

You’re better off asking some of these questions at Vault than over here, and browsing the career guides.

What is Vault?

I agree with Hanna.

Some of what they ask you depends on your cover letter. Mine explicitly states what field I’m interested in and then says that I’m interested in the firm because it has that specialty. So I don’t get asked, “What fields are you interested in?” question very often.

The question I always, always get is, “Why did you go to law school?” The secondary question I get is, “Why not engineering?” That, from what I understand, is pretty rare - but if you have a science background, be prepared to answer it.

The other questions I get (and I’ve actually started prepping for them by bringing appropriate materials along) are about my work experience. There is the inevitable, “What is ____?” (With that being a very specific project I worked on.)

I’ll also get asked about the clubs that I’m in and the activities I do - get lots of Moot Court questions. I have noticed that interviewers avoid asking me about the political organization that I’m heavily involved in - whether it’s out of ignorance (possible) or just tact, I’m not sure - but I’ve never gotten an interview question on it, but have been asked about everything else.

I’m always asked (and be prepared for this), “Do you have any questions for me?”

Do you voice any concerns/question? Do law firms expect some sort of response back?

And this is way off topic, but when does the new US NEWS and WORLD REPORTS come out?

You are absolutely supposed to respond with several substantive questions. They’re definitely not expecting you to say, “nope, I’m good.”
