Law School Graduation Gift

The son of close friends will be graduating from law school in May. He’s 27, single, and has a job lined up.

We’re trying to think of something to get him and so far, no ideas. I figured I come to the source of all great information - CC!

Ideas???

I have a few ideas you may consider.

Gifts that relate to the area where he will be living – Zagat’s guides, subscription to local magazines/newspapers, maps, etc.

Housewarming-type gifts for his new home.

Other lifestyle gift cards (life may be a bit strained as a new attorney - might as well make it enjoyable) – itunes, Starbucks, etc.

I don’t remember receiving any gifts, except that my then husband got me an incredibly expensive watch which, for some reason, made my mother angry.

If he is a wine drinker, a few nice bottles of wine would be welcome!

Check with his parents–they may already be getting him a nice leather briefcase. You could get him a leather notepad.

You might consider an artisan fountain pen. Sounds crazy, I know.

I know I would have loved a special fountain pen for my law school graduation. I also like the idea of something related to where he will be living - a gift certificate to a very special restaurant there for a dinner for two might be great. As he will find out, graduation is one thing, but it is the bar exam that many of us still have nightmares about, and having the opportunity for a blowout celebration when the news comes is something I am sure he would remember forever.

Shameless plug for a friend–lawyer turned artist. The book (Habeus Circus) or any of the prints from it would make great gifts for a new law school grad.

Nice of you to want to give him a gift. I got a cross pen and pencil set that I remember (but probably don’t still have.) Some other nice desk accessories might be useful. A gift certificate for a restaurant is nice too. I have to say that I can’t remember receiving my notification on passing the bar at all. I do, however, remember very well going to the courthouse to be “sworn in” (for admission to the first state where I received a license), and I did go out to lunch after that. I still have nightmares about a lot of things, but I guess I was fortunate, I never had nightmares about the bar exam.

WHAT?!! The Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend, 1984…

The Saturday of Veteran’s Day weekend 1984! Some people didn’t get them that day and were freaking out until the mail came on Tuesday. Relief when I saw “we are pleased . . .,”. didn’t need to read further!

AnotherMom2: How can you not remember??? Another member of Class of '84 here … we got our notifications on same night as (I think) the George Bush / Geraldine Ferraro VP debate. We were all working already, but the partners at our firm let us all leave early to go home to get our mail. It was a blow out night, that ended with some very hung over associates dragging ourselves in to the office very late the next morning! A couple of years later, I moved to another state and had to do it all over again. That time, I got the letter just as I was leaving for my college roommate’s wedding. I debated about whether to open it or not … and did … and had a VERY good time at the wedding. Anyway, I remember Geraldine F with fond memories for many reasons.

As for a gift, all these years later I remember only one: the flowers from my aunt that were delivered to my apt the day BEFORE the bar exam. They came with a wonderful note of encouragement (something about bringing smiles), and arrived just as the tension of exam prep was getting really intense. It was perfect. I would definitely pay that one forward if given the chance.

For grad/professional school, I usually give a desk Clock. Can be used at home or work.

I have it engraved on the back with recipient’s initials, degree and date. I prefer the ones that don’t look like a promotional item. Can often find at a nice jewelry store.

Here’s an online source:
[Engraved Plate](<a href=“The Clock Depot :: theclockdepot”>The Clock Depot :: theclockdepot) Some nice clocks, and will also do a engraved plate for $7.00 plus some $$ based on # of letters in engraving.

Some nice desk clocks (not sure if they can be engraved)

Great ideas! Thank you all so much.

I never quite knew when to celebrate. We did have little dinner after graduation, but I was nervous about the bar. The day the bar exam was done was when Delta Flight 191 crashed pretty darned close to my house, so we were all glued to the TV. The day I passed the bar, the then husband brought home this expensive used sports car (not as a gift for me, mind you), so the evening was more of an argument than a celebration.

But I will say that for years I got a knot in the pit of my stomach in early November as the bar results were being released.

missypie- I wasn’t taking the bar that year, but I will NEVER forget the crash of Delta 191 by DFW. It is sort of like the Kennedy shootings- I will never forget where I was at that moment.
