Lawsuit

I saw a post in the “official results” thread that suggested that students who haven’t heard back yet may have a class-action lawsuit on their hands. To quote nervous 1,

“Are there any lawyers out there? I wonder whether there is potential for a class action suit against Michigan. Students paid their application fees under the expectation of an answer by a stated date. Michigan kept pushing the date out later and left many students hanging until the “wire”. A decision close to May 1 is not a fair contract to a student who has to deposit by May 1st to any other US institution.”

Just wanted to get this more publicity than it would get stuck in that thread. I would be willing to join this lawsuit if it was a real case. How can we reasonably be expected to make a decision in less than 10 days from the national deposit deadline when other schools have let us known for months? Ridiculous.

Hey, sure, go for it. That way UMich can just reject all those deferred in December and keep it simple. Hey, they can take a rest. I’m sure they didn’t REALLY want to read all your essays either! In fact, maybe they could be more efficient if they just ran your inflated GPA and SAT/ACT score through a software sorting program and did a quick credit check to make sure you had $48 k in the bank. Who cares what your counselor said about you or the gazillion regional awards or whether or not you’re a fit for the school.

Hey, if you’re not in the top 5% of your class and have less than a 3.95 and a 2100, just don’t apply then. We wouldn’t want them wasting everyone’s precious time doing a QUALITATIVE ASSESSMENT OF YOUR CANDIDACY, would we? Or trying to compare apples to apples.

So sure, when life doesn’t go your way, JUST SUE.

(kp, I of course am not referring to you directly; just the asinine idea ;)

has anyone not heard back at all? i.e. applied but no decision? If so then you have a good reason to complain. But if you’re deferred way back, I’d just treat it as a rejection and move on.

My god, are you kidding? The stated date was “mid-April.” Whether or not April 22 falls under what you would consider mid-April or not is a whole other discussion, but in the end it’s what the Univeristy considers mid-April that counts. That timeframe was never changed. You agreed to it from the start. The question of whether or not it’s “fair” really has no significance at all. You would lose for sure but hey it’s your time and money, not mine. You can’t go into court and argue that a University should be punished because something isn’t “fair” or “reasonable.” Especially when no date was ever actually pushed back.

Chill guys, I was just wondering it’s not like I’m actually gonna go and sue UM. It’s just that I applied in January and haven’t heard anything at all from them. Either way, I’m going to SMU. Michigan can suck it.

If the glove don’t fit, you must reject…

I applied regular decision and haven’t heard a word. And you know what I think? Anyone who suggests a lawsuit is pathetic and immature. I’m obviously unhappy about how long its taking but I’m not going to start crying about it.

kp217, SMU is a great school and I’m sure you’ll have a great time. I’m a UM student myself but my best friend goes to SMU as a Biology major and loves the school, Dallas, and everything SMU has to offer. It’s a beautiful campus with lots of great people and many research & internship opportunities - as much as I love UMich, GO MUSTANGS!

echoxiv,
No word at all from Michigan? or were you deferred earlier?

I applied under regular decision in January. Michigan hasn’t given me any hints towards a decision since then. I emailed a letter of continued interest to my admissions counselor two weeks ago. She thanked me for the update, and told me that they were planning on finishing decisions for deferred applicants in the next two weeks (so by this weekend). I noticed that she thought I was deferred but I decided against correcting her because I thought she would be too busy so I just sent a thank you and left it. From my school, I know of at least one who was accepted early, one who was deferred then accepted, two who were deferred and haven’t heard, and two (three including me) who applied regular and haven’t heard either.

That’s bad. I thought they have improved this year as many RD applicants received a timely decision of admit/reject/deferred. I see they haven’t covered everyone.
