LCD Projector in dorm, theft?

I have a LCD projector in my room for video games, movies, and occasionally TV, and I was just thinking of how cool it would be to set that baby up in the dorm once I got there. Assuming there is room to hang a pulldown screen or a decent sized wall(I’m 99% sure there is) I think it would work out quite well.
All in all it might take up LESS room than a regular CRT TV. The only thing I am worried about is theft since It would be quite the hot commodity if it works out as I am picturing it.

Just wondering if this sound like a good idea. What is your experience with theft in dorms?

if its a projector and its not gonna move then get a cable lock for it.

dont let people know you have one.

Lock your door, and it’s not likely to be a problem.

always keep your eye on it when you’re using it (since i’m assuming you won’t play video games by yourself, other people in your dorm will know you have one and will want to play video games in your room).
when you’re NOT using it, find someway to hide AND lock it. and never ever ever forget to lock it. also, never let anyone find out where you hide it.

Most projectors have a cable lock slot like those on laptops. Find a decent laptop lock and your problem should be helped a ton.
Something like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/NOTEBOOK-CABLE-LOCK-LAPTOP-4-digit-Safe-Cable-Lock-NEW_W0QQitemZ130087354532QQcategoryZ31529QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item130087354532</a>
Just a warning - those projector bulbs are expensive and they only are rated for about 1000 hours - might be cheaper to find a crt.

My friend’s roommate has an LCD projector in his room. So far no problems, and people know he has one because you can see them playing DoubleDash from the sidewalk. I would just get a good cable lock and hook it to a pipe or a radiator.

Maybe get one of those small LCD TVs…like a 15 or 20".

And those projectors cost like $1500 whereas a smaller LCD tv might cost you a few hundred.

i know of a few people that have the projector in their dorm suite, and it’s pretty much awesome haha. they never seem to lock their suite door, and it hasn’t been stolen…not saying yours isn’t threatened, but a good deal of it is really a matter of evaluating the people on your floor and how much you trust them. also, if you still feel unsure about it, try and locking it down with one of those laptop locks if possible, or just take it down when you’re not using it if the setup is simple enough.

Do you really want to worry about it? Plus I guarantee you will eat up lamp hours like crazy. Just bring a TV.

If anyone is determined to steal it, they will get it. Hacksaws work wonders! lol

I think theft is a pretty overrated issue in college. Sure, if you leave something valuable out in the open (lounge) and leave, it might get taken. But other than that, chances are pretty low. At my frat we invested in a fireproof safe to store our jewelery / expensive items during parties since every room is open to the pubic.

As for the projector, it would be very obvious if somoene came into your room and just walked away with it. Don’t worry.

Eh i would be care with it. i wasn’t worried about theft in college until my roommate’s friend and his roommate both got their laptop stolen while the roommate left to take a shower.

Get those cables and hopefully they won’t come at it with hacksaws…although i realized my local dollarstore sold hacksaws. true story

The ones on the ceiling in classrooms are set hard in place. If there is any sort of movement from the placement, a “fire alarm” goes off. That thing is so loud. My Comp Sci lab partner told me about what it was like being next to one that went off on accident.
