Leadership = Important ?

<p>I have only had 5 leadership positions EVER in my 4 years of high school.</p>

<p>Why?</p>

<p>Because at my school, only the POPULAR kids ever win any kind of election. They run for office, win, and then never do anything again for the club/organization. </p>

<p>So does leadership really matter that much to colleges? Will I have a weaker application just because I don't have 1897348325* friends who vote for me in every election? </p>

<p>No, leadership doesn't matter that much, even to the elite colleges. It's all about being committed deeply. If you're leader of 10 different clubs, they'll have an interesting reaction to that...</p>

<p>I would get more friends, but I hate the people at my school. They're all shallow point-grabbers who are obsessed with comparing all their grades with each other.</p>

<p>as i am sure others will tell you, its not the number of leadership activities, but how involved you are with them. I onyl have 2 leadership acitivites, but I have been extremely involved. In the same way, I spend a lot of time of very few activites. Adcoms prefer depth rather than spread.</p>

<p>Ambition is more important than anything else. EC's are examples of ambition. Do not equate popularity with leadership or its reverse. I'd think that ATTITUDE is even a better measure of success. I'd think that people with good attitudes and ambition become leaders. There are a lot of books on this topic. Go find a mentor.</p>

<p>haha i only had one position through junior year (representative for my advisement for 9th), so i decided to run for 10 different positions at the beginning of this year. sadly, i lost every one of them too :( i think u have enough leadersip already, so start working on ec's</p>

<p>I think leadership can show through on your app in other ways than having x-position in a club. For ex. I moved a couple of times during high school which made building up positions in a club hard, so I showed leadership in other ways. I volunteered and worked on a fundraiser, and wrote my essay about how my passion showed through in these activities. I don't think leadership is a trait that only comes with a certain position, I if you are a true leader it shines through in all your work.</p>

<p>mandi, you call the kids in your school all "boring point-grabbers" but to ME you seem like one yourself, so you should fit right in. You're sitting there COUNTING your leadership activities instead of actually committing your time on them. If you asked me to count how many leadership positions I've had, I probably can't. Because I don't keep track of them as a figure of popularity or a number definition of success. When it comes down to it, it's probably less than the "FIVE" that you have, but I don't think I'll ever bother to count them up. You seem like one hell of a leader to me.</p>

<p>Good lord, I have one - editor of the school paper, and that takes up 110% of my time. How do you manage five? I would think more than two or three would look bad, because you're just in a 'leadership' position for the sake of being in a leadership position. I'd worry about having too many if I were you.</p>

<p>And, how many leadership positions ARE there in your school?! How in the world can all the people you know each have 10 leadership positions in your school? Logically, that's not possible, insane over-achiever chick.</p>
