Learn AP Computer Science A in a Night?!?!?

“First of all, can I do it, and secondly what resource can be utilized to the max so that I can prepare enough to at least get a 4 in 7 hours?”

No. You’ve had to at least have had some experience with programming…if not, you’re dead. I’ve probably done more than 50 hours of programming this year in AP Compsci without any coding experience (besides simple html, css) and I’m not even taking the AP test just so I can study a bit more, take a higher level of CS, and get a 5 next year.

If you REALLY NEED TO do this, here:

These might help.

Good luck on your studies. Also, once you flip open your AP review book, you are in for a big surprise.

@DoctorMagic, that’s probably a good idea… If you were familiar with programming, that would be one thing, but the concepts can sometimes take weeks to truly understand. Are you self-studying BC Calc too or is that with a class? I’m curious because I’m taking the AB exam tomorrow as a self study.

Take a break, you’re obviously stressed out and need a bit of sleep.
Coding is not something to be taken lightly. If you had prior experience than Java, then you wouldn’t really need to cram for the exam.

Best of luck, I have to cram for Friday for Euro.

It simply isn’t possible. Programming is a skill you have to develop. I’m sure you could memorize how to declare classes and methods and for loops and foreach loops and if statements, but all of that is useless without the experience to know when and how to use them. What the other guy said is absolutely spot on; it’s like trying to cram Spanish without knowing Spanish.

@wcclirl44, No, I am enrolled in AP Calculus BC at my school and got an A- throughout and can get a 5 comfortably on practice exams.

oh my gosh, I love staying up all night 2 nights in a row (will be 3 tomorrow) for ap exams. you begin to feel like a zombie and things like water bottles start “moving” back and forth when you look at them. oh, and my brain practically feels like it has died on me… I see text, but its starting to mean nothin to me XD. hopefully this makes sense haha

there is a … hobo under his nose (i think)

If the OP gets a 4 and I get a 2 or 1 I’ll be PEEVED.

Ok I’m being a little mean here, however, in all seriousness, I think it’s irresponsible to sign up for an AP exam and not start studying until the night before. Maybe, if you have solid programming experience, you could leave it until two nights before and just memorize the syntax (If you already know C++ that’s even better), but seriously… know your limits… or at least have a basic idea of approximately what your limit is. Failure is a good thing… it tells us what our limits are and helps us focus in order to improve. Yes, that last sentence is a bit cliche, but true. Just so you know. I studied as hard as I could through the last 3 weeks and even though I’m getting an A in the class, I don’t think I passed the AP exam.

However, from my experience, AP exam scores tend to be higher than expected. The grading curve can be ridiculous for some subjects… however, one night of studying can’t save you from a 1 unless you’re a savant.

^It’s not whether or not I get lower than a 4 or a 4… I’m definitely getting at least a 4. It’s just whether or not I got a 5 that I’m not sure about.

Obviously, I have no idea how you did, but I would be shocked if you got a 1 or 2 and honestly put any effort into the class/exam at all. I started “studying” at about 1 last night and went until a little before 7. I say “studying” because 1/2 of that was me doing random things like checking out CC lol.

APCS is quite an easy AP if you understand the concepts–they literally GIVE YOU all of the code and methods that you need in addition to a ton of sample code to use during the test. It almost felt like cheating when I used 90% of the code in the back packet on one of the FRQs. I will say that the MC were quite challenging/time-consuming, but the free response questions hopefully made up for that. Honestly, I feel like the only reason the MC was moderatly difficult was because of the 3 solid hours of sleep that I have gotten over about the past 70 hours haha.

About the 1 night of studying thing… I started self studying AP Environmental Science last Saturday and spend two days on it. Based on the score calculators online and how I think I did, I got something from a high 4 to a mid 5. This isn’t me making BS up either… I got a mid 5 on the 1998 released exam.

I’m curious, did you end up taking it?

Yes, to all of you, I took it, but it was total guesswork and a waste of 87 bucks. I’m turning in the AP cancellation form which can be found on the College Board website.

Lololololol

@zach12 your comment about the AP’s is insultive to all those who study hard for these AP’s. A hard year of coursework and much additional studying. We worked very hard for this stuff. It plays a role in admissions. Shows proficiency in an array of subjects and is a filter for the top colleges. Cramming is a terrible idea, and it takes a year of coursework and gritty studying but APs are very much a factor
