Ok, I know this will probably **** people off who are taking this class and I don’t mean to discredit the work you’ve put in, but please don’t rant about how I should just give up. What would be the best website, review packet, or review sheet that I can study 7 hours for the AP Computer Science A exam tomorrow. I know math through calculus and have no experience with programming. All I need/want is a 4 or higher on this test. First of all, can I do it, and secondly what resource can be utilized to the max so that I can prepare enough to at least get a 4 in 7 hours?

You’re the same guy who tried to cram APs down right? What happened to your schedule of an hour a night and nonstop studying?

I have successfully crammed all my other AP’s but have had no time for AP Computer Science. Please, no condescending comments and just resources that I can use.

Give it up. It’s not going to happen.

are you joking? how do you expect to even almost understand how to write the code for the FRQ?

I’m doing the same thing! Got to start pretty soon… lol. I actually took the exam last year though (and the class, but with a teacher who actually made me dumber) and got a 4. Additionally, I have quite a good grasp of programming concepts since I have been making iPhone apps since I was in 8th grade. I would recommend using Barron’s if you have it (if not, try to run out to a bookstore and get it). If you can’t get Barron’s, I would say that you might as well give us because any other way of studying would take way too much time.

Also, you really need to understand the concepts for the exam (that is why I got a 4 last year even though I only began studying the night before… I already understood object oriented programming [OOP]). If you are unfamiliar with OOP, I would also say that what you are wanting to do will be nearly impossible.

Good luck though and let me know how it goes!

Coding is more complicated than you think. Although you may learn the basics of Java (if, loops, recursions, syntax), you have to know what the code is saying as well as know the structure of Java and how it is used (objected oriented coding).

TL;DR: You can learn the syntax of coding but you also have to know WHY and HOW the program works. If this was Visual Basic then yes you could cram it but Java is Objected Oriented and far more complicated than you think.

@DoctorMagic – I just read your past posts. I sincerely hope that you fail every single one of your self-studied APs. Can you not just save them for next year when your a senior? Colleges care 0% about AP scores anyway for admissions.

@zach12, screw you, I have crammed for all 8 of them and have taken multiple practice tests for the other 7 and gotten 5’s. So again, if I didn’t make myself clear, go screw yourself. @wcclirl44, I have Barron’s, how much time should I spend on each chapter?

Not unless he’s going for National AP Scholar.

EDIT: If you really want to cram, I would first understand Object Orientated Programming and it’s structure. If you don’t know that, you won’t get anything else (ex. classes, methods, recursion).

@wcclirl44, I’m also unfamiliar with object-oriented programming.

Do you know what GridWorld is?
You have to know pretty specific questions about it for 5 multiple choice questions and 1 FRQ…

Then I wish you best of luck with this test.

If you don’t know OOP, you basically will not know anything that is going on in the program. With OOP comes classes, inheritance, recursion, methods, variables, etc.

This comes from experience from personal coding.

Trying to self-study for APCS overnight without knowing OOP is like trying to self-study for AP Spanish Language overnight without knowing Spanish.

@zach12, Oh sh***, dude that analogy is really damn clear. I can’t learn a language in a night unless I’m an autistic savant. Sorry dude I didn’t know what you meant in your earlier post. At this point, the predicament I’m in is that I’m taking 8 exams this year and it’s my first year taking them and I kinda need/want National AP Scholar for college apps next fall. Should getting a 5 on all or nearly all my 7 other exams and being an AP Scholar with Distinction carry about the same weight as being a National AP Scholar? If so, how should I proceed in cancelling my scores?

Lol dude, you should stop trying to bash other people can get to studying if you really want to cram AP Comp Sci.

If you wanted to get National AP Scholar you should’ve studied for easier exams and save APCS and Physics for next year. You can get a 5 on AP Psych by reading Barron’s the day before, no joke.

I doubt that having AP Scholar w/ Distinction rather than National AP Scholar will get you rejected from anywhere you would have been accepted. Also, I don’t think you can cancel an individual score after taking the test without cancelling all the others, too, so you may just want to skip out and not show up to APCS. (Someone can correct me if I’m wrong on that.)

@DoctorMagic

1st, chill out and treat everyone with a bit more respect. Yes, I know that it is very stressful, but you need to control yourself

2nd, considering you have about 7 hours and there are 9 chapters (usually about 10 pages of content in each), I would try the following time-schedule"

Ch1: 20 minutes (this stuff is basic)
Ch2: 30 minutes
Ch3: 30 minutes
Ch4: 30-40 minutes
Ch5: 30-40 minutes
Ch6: 30-40 minutes
Ch7: 30-40 minutes
Ch8: 30-40 minutes
Ch9: 30-40 minutes

This should leave a little time to go over the practice tests and to review how they score the FRQ (very important! … even if you know the material, you can still do poorly if you don’t know this!)

About not knowing object-oriented concepts, I would just try to go as far as you can in the book. Hopefully, you will get it all, but if you don’t maybe search on youtube for a short video describing the structure of OOP.

If you already have programming experience, you need only 10 minutes to cram for AP CS.
If you don’t, 7 hours are not enough (to get a 5) , no matter how smart you are

http://professionals.collegeboard.com/profdownload/ap-score-cancellation-form.pdf @LolCakeLazors, please look at this and tell me if I can cancel just this exam after taking it as long I get in this form my June 15. @wcclirl44, I think that I’ll just skip AP Computer Science A this year. I’m smart, but definitely not smart enough to learn computer programming from scratch and prepare for the AP in 7 hours.
