Learning a Language

I’d love to learn a new language. I’m not interested in the grammar/reading/writing part, just conversation. Does anyone have experience with Rosetta Stone or Pimsleur or any of the other CD programs?

Pimsleur is the best from my limited experience. Before we went to China I bought two language cd’s meant for tourists and then downloaded Rosetta Stone’s version e-book style onto my computer, hoping that I would absorb some Mandarin before we left. None of them compared to the repetitive and well thought out method by Pimsleur. I borrowed this from my library. I suggest that you see what your library has before you invest in anything.

I used Rosetta Stone and liked it.

However, a friend lent me a set of tapes (not publicly available) from an immersion course he took years ago at Dartmouth (summer program, I think). They are difficult and excellent and made re realize that Rosetta Stone, while useful, is not as good.

Would you have access to any kind of in-person small group conversation style teaching? I do that when I am actually in Mexico (part of the year) and it is the best method of all, I think.
