I got an email today informing me of the freshman “learning communities” in Creswell. Has anybody on here applied? I want to stay in Russell in the fall but the learning communities sound interesting. I’m kind of hesitant about taking classes with the same people all year though.

I was actually in the Literature on Stage LC this year. I only did it first semester, though, because I didn’t have time in my schedule this semester for the service learning project.

You don’t share all of your classes with the same people. I’m pretty sure you only share two classes and one seminar for all of the communities. For Lit on Stage, we all had the same Intro to Cinema class (but it’s quite a large class and there were a ton of other people in there as well; our community did make up my entire breakout session though), the same English class (though a few of us exempted out of English through AP credit and orientation testing), and our seminar was just meeting once a week at the dining hall for lunch with our advisor.

Second semester you don’t really share any classes. If you choose to do the service learning project (like most people), you’ll probably meet as a group only a few times over the semester. You can do just about anything for your service learning project just as long as it relates to the subject of the community. Most people in my group did something theatre/film related, while the Global Engagement community is currently in the process of raising money to go to Thailand over the summer.

Overall, I would recommend participating. It’s a good opportunity to get to know some people who share your interests.
