Least competitive major at OU

For a marginal applicant what are the least and most competitive majors to be accepted into abc would you submit an act of 22 if gpa is also low, he definitely will pick what he loves but want to make sure it’s possible

What state are you a resident of? Your threads are asking about public universities in a number of different states.

I think you need to talk to your school counselor about your college choices. Ohio University has become more competitive for admissions, especially in the allied health professions, nursing, and the like.

You need to find out if you have a good shot at this school.

I would suggest Kent State and Bowling Green as instate options for you…assuming you are from Ohio.

OP-- understand that at some colleges, switching majors is a big deal (i.e. not automatic) AND might end up having to pay for another semester or two to complete the degree.

So applying for a major the kid has no interest in is a very risky plan. A kid who wants to teach HS English probably isn’t going to love majoring in Urban Planning or Agronomy even if those two majors are an “easier admit”.

What does the student want to study? Start there. And if the aspirations are unrealistic (kid wants to study music performance but isn’t a very accomplished musician) take a look at the kids Plan B and C.

Look at the directional colleges in your state of residence. Forget about the major.

Yes Ohio is our state, definitely looking at BGSU and Kent as well as tiffin and schools in Kentucky Mississippi Alabama. Unfortunately Ohio state is out of reach

Many colleges don’t make major acceptance rates available, if they even accept by major. I agree with others that your student should apply for the major they are interested in, especially if it’s a school where changing majors can be difficult.

Ohio U generally accepts by school, not major. Some programs are more competitive than others, see here: Programs with More Selective Admission Guidelines for Freshmen | Ohio University

So, even though an applicant might check anthropology on the OU app, they are really applying to College of Arts and Sciences where one can change majors easily (unless it’s one of the selective majors denoted above.)

Your student should research this info at all the schools on their list, and attend a virtual or in-person admissions session as well. These topics are commonly covered in these sessions, and if not, one can ask. Good luck.

Your son might also want to look into Cleveland State University. I believe hs has an excellent chance of acceptance there.

What major do you hope your son can switch TO?
