Here’s a new one for the Hate category–The Addams Family. We saw it in Chicago and almost left at intermission–it was that dreadful and could not be saved by the talented cast. It doesn’t sound like it changed too too much for NY and still people are flocking to it. Go figure!

hate hate hate hate phantom
haha

I just saw Phantom of the Opera last week and I liked it but it was hard to understand the lyrics when everyone sang at the same time.

I generally don’t hate any musical. But for some reason, the shows I really like… the critics hate. I actually really enjoyed Pirate Queen and A Tale of Two Cities. I would imagine not too many people will be able to reply regarding their feelings about these two shows… they weren’t up long enough for many people to see them!

The only show I really didn’t like… South Pacific. I didn’t like it when I saw a high school do it and I didn’t like it when I saw it two years ago on Broadway. Loved how the floor moved back to show the orchestra. But that was it. It’s the only musical I’ve ever fallen asleep in!

I saw Take Flight at McCarter recently. Actually really liked it. But thought the guy playing the publisher was the worst singer I’ve ever heard in a professional production. Maybe he was sick? He was cracking and going off key all over the place. Other than that… I really enjoyed it.

Honestly, the stuff that Rogers wrote with Oscar are nothing compared to the earlier stuff with Hart…though most of the R&H shows are sadly neglected today.

I also love A Tale of Two Cities, thought it was beautiful and I saw the final performance! But I also really like South Pacific–the music is just beautiful: Bali’ Hai, and Some enchanted evening are just gorgeous. I think the message is still really relevant today too. I fell asleep both times I saw Cats–it is Waaaaaaaaay too long.

stagedoor - I have to disagree about your final assessment of South Pacific, but the thought of the crescendo that occurred when the stage rolled back from the pit can still give me goosebumps!

I don’t think I assessed South Pacific…just stated my opinion. South Pacific is mentioned several times in this thread - people like it and people don’t like it - there’s nothing to disagree about. I respect the opinion of those who liked it as much as I respect the opinion of those who don’t. As someone mentioned earlier, it’s fortunate that we have a variety of shows that appeal to a variety of people.

Sorry - possibly a poor word choice on my part Maybe it would have been better to say that I enjoyed production a lot more than you.

Having lived in London for several years, maybe saw a few that didn’t make it over here.
Chitty-Chitty Bang Bang comes to mind…my 6 yr. old D loved it, but Z-Z-Z-Z !! Also Oklahoma…best nap i"ve had in a while.
