Leaving at Winterbreak

Hello, I play football at a small school of about 2,500 people. I was dead set on playing college football out of high school so I made the best choice I could. That being said after this semester I am planning on leaving this school and going to a cc for a semester before enrolling at a big school next fall, the thing is I am not sure how to tell my parents my plan or how they will take it.

What is driving this decision?

Bottom line - you are an adult (probably) and it’s your life. You are entitled to do what you think is best but so are your parents. How do you think they will take it? Normally I would say the best course of action is to be direct and clear that you do have a plan and that this decision has been carefully considered. Make sure that’s true.

PS: Good luck whatever you decide!

I am just ready to be a normal student, I had been told if you want to do the sport go do it because you can never get that back, so I came here and am doing it. But I think I am ready to leave the game and take on a new challenge

Are you there on a sports scholarship and if so, does this mean that you can’t afford to stay there if not playing football?

no I am on scholarship, but I can afford it without it, I want to go to a big school

If football isn’t a viable career path for you then I think you should prioritize school choice by academic & career opportunities, rather than by football.

I presume you are applying to the “big school” in this admissions round?

Prioritizing academics makes perfect sense. Unless your parents are completely sports-mad and don’t want you to give up your sport, they should be able to accept your decision to find a place that is a better academic match. However, if they are helping you pay for your education they may want to have some input in the decision about where you should study.

Talk with them. Find out what their financial limits are, and any conditions that they will impose. For example, some parents would require that you finish your associates degree at the community college to save money before transferring to the “big school”.

Money is not a worry for me when tranferring
