Leaving home for the holidays?

Might want to check your locks twice after reading this.

A half hour, I get up after studying for a while because I see flashing lights outside. There are three cop cars outside my driveway – one’s parked in the driveway, and two are in front of our sidewalk. I was freaked out because I didn’t know what was going, on and it was just my brother and me in the house because mom and dad were out walking the dogs. Well we’re looking outside the window and it turns out that these two guys were going from door to door selling books for a youth club. My dad just got back from their walk and these guys run up to him before he gets to the door and get really aggressive with their pitch. Dad asks if there’s any type of contact information (if there wasn’t, or if it was fishy, he was going to call the cops anyway because these guys were getting belligerent) and the guy says “my phone’s broken, can I come in and use your phone”? Dad says no, even offers to bring the phone out. The guy gets offended, asks why he can’t come in, then runs off when he sees two cop cars approaching, leaving his brother behind. The brother is left to defend himself and the cops are now out in the neighborhood looking for the guy that ran off.

The cops told us that stuff like this happens around the holidays; these are people that scan the neighborhood, seeing first if they can gain access into the house so they can see what kind of loot people have. Then they wait for people to leave the house for the holidays, and bam, their stuff is gone when they come back.

It was scary to think this stuff almost happened - I was going to leave town with the family to visit my sister at college for Thanksgiving! Anyway, just reminding you to lock your doors before you go anywhere and stay safe this season.

Reminds me of the opening scene in “Home Alone”…

I’m glad you guys are OK.
