The Wolford Hold-ups look great. Like the ones with the lace tops. Think my husband would too!

Something to think about if you decide to wear hose is nude fishnet. It looks really up to date vs “full” nude hose. And no, it doesn’t look slutty.

“Also- you are way past the stage in life of attracting a mate- that’s the reason the young put so much effort into appearances. Enjoy being the age and body you aged into”

I think it’s healthy to want to look nice for yourself, not because you’re trying to impress anybody. My 95 yo grandmother still dresses attractively, puts on makeup, etc at her age. God bless her.

I just asked about this a few weeks ago for a May wedding and the CC advisors told me hose was OK! I wore Leggs in my tall/plus size with my maxi dress and felt great/looked great. And ditto for graduation at Cornell last weekend.

Yes, Pizzagirl, god bless your grandma.

Did not make it to the Wolford store last night - got a distress call from my mate that we were running low on eggs and milk and went to Costco instead. So a Zappos box is on its way to my house. I am intrigued how these would hold up.

I have a grandma like Pizzagirl, she put on make up the minute she wake up, my sister and I, we go sans make up all the time except for special occasions.

I clearly have to look around more for hose . . I guess I just don’t notice it when I am in a department store. But I looked online and there are quite a few choices. I am gulping at the cost, but if they last and look good, I suppose it’s worth it.

Have not seen these in person, might make for an interesting look at a wedding :)

Pretty Polly makes awesome hosiery! Here is a run resistant option - for plus size ladies. And by run resistant they do mean it!! Wish Nordie’s carried a regular option.

But what above when wearing open-toe shoes or sandals? Impossible to wear panty hose. Or even with shorts? I have tried self tanner but not leg makeup, which I am going to go get tomorrow! I have never had a spray tan, but may try that before our beachy vacation. It is not about attracting a mate or pleasing others, but just feeling good about myself. Thanks for the suggestions for my somewhat veiny legs.

There are tights for peep toe shoes and sandals! Just check UKTights.com - tons of options and great styles.

I’m with @rom828 - the St. Tropez self-tan bronzing mousse is terrific. It looks really natural and colors instantly (so you can see if you’ve missed any spots), and it will make your legs look great! (and much more comfortable than hose, which I think looks odd in really warm weather)

I’ve used both the regular mousse and the “Instant” one which you can put on at the last minute if needed. There’s also light and dark colors so be sure to pick the one that’s closest to your natural skin tone - obviously it will look fake if the color is way too dark.

This product is not like foundation or makeup, but rather like a “stain”, which may sound strange but I assure you the color is very natural and it won’t run or smudge or do anything horrible to embarrass you while you’re wearing it! (assuming you don’t jump into a pool I suppose - but then again as Mother of the Groom that would be pretty embarrassing anyway - so just don’t do that)

The trick is to apply the mousse very quickly and rinse hands well in between each application. I sometimes use use vynal or latex disposible gloves to apply so the color doesn’t ruin my manicure (the mousse is especially dangerous with buff-colored polish which I always wear).

Best to you whatever you decide - and enjoy your events!

I am going to buy a pair of toeless hose from UKtights just to see if they work. But one has to be careful with the color matching one’s skin because it would look weird if the toes are a different color from the legs. Going out to get a can of St. Tropez mousse today. I also bought a groupon for a spray tan which I have never done before.
Lots of good ideas from CC.

BB, I didn’t know Zappos carries Wolford. Thanks for that tip.

I would go with leg make-up or self tanner before toe-less panty hose with peep toe shoes

I hate hose, but if Kate Middleton can wear 'em, then so can I. Sheer hose are fine. They’re not passé, just annoying. However, if you get a really high end brand, they won’t be too bad and their slight sheen will hide whatever you want to hide. I’d choose those over itchy leg spackle any day!

I like the leg makeup. It’s really light. I cannot stand the smell of self-tanners.

Wow, never heard of leg makeup before, but I’m glad it exists for folks who want it. I have worn stockings maybe 6 times in my life, four times for weddings (mine or if I was in wedding party) and twice related to appearances for work. The rest of the times, I either stick with nice slacks and gorgeous tops or a dress and don’t worry if folks see the scars and sometimes bruises on my legs.

Have never tried self tanners either, but sounds like there are some health warnings related to them, as well as scent that several have commented about unfavorably.

Bumping this thread up because I am in the south of France right now, doing a project for a client on sun care / sunscreens. I am normally fairly pale, and am not a big sun worshipper type and usually stay fairly pale, but since I have to investigate a lot of beauty chains / products / salons for this project (I know, sob), on a whim yesterday I went and had a spray tan done here. And I have to say, I am REALLY pleased. It looks completely natural, not at all fake or hard looking. No orange whatsoever. It just looks sun-kissed (which is a look the French women particularly prize). No Real Housewives of XXX look, at all!

Now that I know what it looks like, I can see doing something like that if you know you are going to expose your legs at a summer wedding. Especially because it’s all over, as opposed to changing just the skin on your legs and nothing else.

I’ve used one of the gradual self-tanners–either Jergens or Dove, don’t recall–to give my legs just a tinge of something in lieu of Celtic/Scandinavian fishbelly white. It’s not bad, and certainly not orangey and weird-looking like the stuff people tried in jr high. Generally, though, I’m inclined to go with tea length and sidestep the whole thing.

Back in the 80s, I used to wear fun pantyhose by Hue much of the time. They had things like sheer palest pink with dots, sheer black with a retro back seam, and so forth.

I guess this is an old thread, but when my D did All Star cheer, they used the Sally Hanson (Henson?) Airbrush stuff and it looked flawless.
