Some quick questions. My mother attended Harvard Medical School. Does this count as a legacy?

Also, I took the SAT and got a 2160. 800 Critical Reading, 690 Math, 670 Writing. Should I take the SAT again? I am aware I am below the mean of Harvard students but I really do not want to take it if I don’t have to because I would prefer to focus on things this summer besides studying.

Last question: My mother is full Mexican, my father is white. As a result, I have a really white last name and I have not really been influenced or grown up with a Mexican culture. Can I still put Mexican as my primary ethnicity and be considered for affirmative action?

Thanks in advance.

I COULD BE WRONG ABOUT EVERYTHING BUT

i think its a legacy only if your father or mother attended for undergraduate

You dont have to take the Sat again but if you think you can get 2250+ that will help, but you might do better things over the summer

Yes you can put mexican, but **** that ****, challenge yourself try to get in with affirmative action…but i am only saying that because i am not an urm… :[

Why don’t you ask this on the Race in College Admissions (or whatever it’s called) thread? I believe it’s in the College Admissions forum.

Yes, this is true. OP, you do not qualify for legacy status.

You can always try the ACT for shakes. D had only a 2080 SAT with months of prep yet scored a 33 and then 35 on the ACT w/ absolutely no prep.

without* sry for typo

A parent who went to a graduate school is a legacy at Penn (I asked) and at Yale as far as I know. Whether legacy status means much these days is another story. The Yale position is that the higher admit rate reflects the much stronger legacy applicant pool and probably makes it easier to write a convincing essay “Why Yale?”. I don’t know if the legacy status means more in Cambridge but I would be surprised if the admissions office there categorizes differently than these other two Ivys.

Legacy varies by college. Almost no colleges give legacy to students whose parents attended for grad–Stanford is one, Harvard is not.

Legacy only counts for undergrad, sorry :/
