My son is a junior with a 1280/1900 SAT so far- I thought it was low and will go up. 3.6 GPA. He is a varsity athlete, yearbook editor, and YMCA camp couselor. He is a 5 time legacy. What are his odds of getting in? Kids from his school average 3.9 to get in.

Hi sail. It would be interesting to know what Admissions would say if you asked. My gut feeling is that legacy helps some as long as the student is qualified. What I mean is they may be in the lower deciles of a typical Tulane admit, but still within the range that Tulane does accept. Your son certainly seems to meet that criteria, in fact it looks to me like he is not that far below the Tulane average. I am assuming in saying that the 3.6 is UW. If that is weighted, makes it a little tougher but still probably not out of the range, especially being a 5 time legacy. I would think that a student with those stats that has no history with Tulane might get turned down but the legacy tie could push your son to the admit side.

Just out of curiosity, does “five time legacy” mean 5 other relatives that went to Tulane of any generation, or do you mean he would actually be the 5th generation? The latter would really be going back a ways! Anyway, I think with a lot of demonstrated interest and making sure admissions knows the strong family connection to Tulane, I like his chances. Very important is that his junior grades and his first semester senior year grades are strong. If he can get the SAT’s up to 1350/2000 or so, even better of course. Just to be clear, this is strictly IMHO, I have no special knowledge of how admissions really looks at these things.

Good luck!

He would be third generation. Grandmother, Mom, Dad, 2 uncles, and an aunt are grads. One uncle works at the medical school so I guess technically is faculty.

Thanks for your response- that’s what I was thinking but did not want to mislead him.
