Legacy vs. Development applicant

Are all alumni contacted and visited by the Development Office? I didn’t know if it meant anything in terms of our kids getting the normal legacy boost, or if it meant something more (like they thought we had tons of cash). We get a personal visit at least once a year - do most alumni?

My impression is that the development folks make personal visits to alumni who a) have made generous donations in the past or have the wherewithal to make genenerous donations in the future (I’m not talking truly huge amounts, either–the people who give $1K a year every year or who give a one-time gift of $25,000 for a 25th reunion are critically important to Yale’s fundraising), b) are actively involved in the local Yale club and might be able to point the development office to other alumni who could make sizeable donations, or c) are hooked up in the local community and might be willing to help the development office solicit funds from wealthy alums.

As for getting a visit every year, I think it depends on where you live. The development office folks only spend a couple of days a year in my state, so I think they only meet with key people. If you live in the NE or California where the development office staff probably spends more time, I’d guess that they visit with more alumni.
