legacy

how much does being a legacy student help at mit?

None. It’s not a factor considered in admissions.

“Even at MIT, where we pat ourselves on the back for our meritocratic ways until our skin is raw, admissions staffers report that legacies are granted an additional review before their rejection is finalized. At several schools, such students receive much more than an extra review.”
-Ken Nesmith, MIT Tech, March 23, 2001.

Marilee Jones, head of MIT admissions, has said the same thing in her blog. I can’t find the link, though.

“Students who are legacy and rejected do get their application read over again by Marilee Jones (Dean of Admissions), as a courtesy to the alums, but Ben Jones (Communications Manager) has indicated that no rejection has ever been overturned as a result of this.”
-“olo” said this on this web site;I assume he asked Ben Jones (admissions officer) about this.
