Legit Scholarship? Youth Foundation: Hadden Scholarships

Here’s the website…

http://fdncenter.org/grantmaker/youthfdn/guide.html

The thing that seems fishy to me is the fact that on the application it asks for not just the usual parental 1040 forms, but also ALL form 1099s and W-2s. Is anyone completing this scholarship or ever had to submit that much financial information for a scholarship?

Any opinions or comments? Thanks alot.

Anyone…?

I am thinking about applying and am curious about that too

It’s a bit of an odd application process, but it appears to be designed to weed out as many students who can’t follow directions/aren’t willing to take the time to apply as possible. Since the scholarship is listed with FastWeb, a reputable search engine, I think it’s legitimate. In any case, they don’t ask for any money from you (the main sign of a scam), so you really don’t have anything to lose by applying.

I thought the process was a little odd though:

Write letter requesting “request for application form”

Request application (with teacher recommendation)

Submit application, including entire tax return (all schedules) and HANDWRITTEN essay.

Weird.

I applied for this, and I agree that since it’s listed on Fastweb and doesn’t ask for any money, it seems legitimate enough. I also think they’re trying to weed out applicants by requesting such specific info. On the application, it was stated clearly that a lot of people apply for the scholarship, and since it’s listed on Fastweb, I’m sure that’s true. Of all the scholarships I applied to, this one seemed to place the most emphasis on financial need, so all the crazy instructions are probably just trying to discourage kids who are wasting their time. Unfortunately, I think my application will end up in the “waste of time” pile, but at least I tried.

At least it doesn’t ask for a fee (from what I read). It’s strange how some ask for a application fee.

I applied for this scholarship. I hope it was legit… they sure asked for a lot of personal information! I guess we will see.

Verification for Carnegie Mellon’s FinAid, requires W2’s but not 1099’s. Information from 1099’s are listed on the tax schedules that accompany the 1040. Appealing CMU’s FA, also requires the above disclosure and a letter from the employer stating the wages shown on the W-2’s. The 1040 also must be signed and is assumed to be a legal copy.

Hey everyone, this scholarship is totally legitimate.

I was a scholarship recipient this year…$4,000 already came to my school account : )

Totally worth the long process…

Good luck!

When applying for this scholarship I already sent a SASE and received the request for application form. I am now in the process of getting a recommendation letter to attach and send for the actual application. However, I am confused on what exactly I am being recommended for. Do they just write about my general character or some specific qualities. Also I know in the next step there is an essay requirement, what specifically is the essay on? If someone could help that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
