Legitimacy of Hotel Carlton?

Is Hotel Carlton legit? I took a look at the place today and it seemed nice and organized enough, but the reviews on yelp and insiderpages make it sound scary as hell. I was really considering living here, but now I’m really worried. Does anyone have any experience there?

The mail room is really sketchy. It’s an open area so technically anyone can grab mail/packages out of it since there’s no lock/barrier protecting the mail. The desk person is supposed to watch over it and make sure tenants get their mail.

The review by Maia B. is true - For a class, I was in attendance at a Rent Board hearing addressing her claims. ([Agenda: RSB 2009 Oct 19 - City of Berkeley, CA](<a href=“The City of Berkeley”>The City of Berkeley)). She had issues with a really hot apartment and moved out later due to poor living conditions. Although her initial claim was rejected the board approved her appeal, which awarded her $260 rent credit for the inhabitable conditions. During the hearing it was noted that she had issues with her mail being stolen (packages from FedEx and UPS that had confirmation delivery and tracking #s ended up missing and police reports were filed). It also sounds really fishy that Rent Board mail disappeared… which prevented her from properly filing appeals to overturn the initial rulings.

Although Maia wasn’t at the hearing, the manager was. He tried to have some evidence presented against Maia, but it wasn’t that great. He noted how Maia’s boyfriend, who is banned from entering the building, snuck in on several occasions when the door man took a bathroom break. This sounds like a major security problem considering the building’s location on Telegraph. I’m not sure why he presented this evidence as it showed security flaws with the mail room - and how mail could easily be stolen when the desk staff takes a break.

It’s not unusual to be loved by anyone.
It’s not unusual to have fun with anyone

Yeah…I wouldn’t even risk it with that place. Seriously. Keep apartment hunting.

Save yourself while you still can. I have heard nothing but negative stuff about the landlord and this place is just sketch in general. It looks decent now, but don’t be fooled by the facade…
