just wondering if someone could give me some insight into which of these programs would be the best choice. I also got accepted to the honors program at northeastern with a 13k scholarship if that makes a difference

Haven’t heard of Lehigh… do know that GaTech is a world class university and ranks top 5 in most engineering disciplines. Don’t know too much about Northeastern, do know that it’s a decent school and has a solid program, though GT is definitely top notch.

can anyone who’s heard of lehigh weigh in?

hadsed, you haven’t heard of Lehigh?

It is the one that is ranked #35, along with another one, GeorgiaTech in the USNWR overall ranking of top Research Universities in this country.

[National Universities Rankings - Best Colleges - Education - US News and World Report](http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/national-universities-rankings/page+2)

You have heard of GeorgiaTech, haven’t you?

you can also find Lehigh and GeorgiaTech here:

In general, GeorgiaTech’s Engineering program is more highly regarded than Lehigh’s. Lehigh has a highly rated undergrauate business school also. However, as you can see, both universities are about equal overall in USNWR ranking.

Lehigh has only 4,800 undergraduates compared to GT’s 13,000 and its student to teacher ratio is about 9:1, about 1/2 of GT’s 18:1 ratio.

Although GT’s total endowment is slightly larger than Lehigh’s, $944 million to $886 million as of June 2009, more importantly - the endowment per student is 3 times higher at Lehigh, $128,000 to $49,000.

If you attend GT, plan to stay there a little longer than 4 years, as GT’s 4 year graduation rate is only 31% compared to Lehigh’s 72%. The 6 year graduation rate for GT is 77%, while Lehigh’s is 81%.

Number of classes with 50 or greater students
Lehigh = 10
GT = 22

National Academy of Engineering (NAE) Faculty Members
Lehigh = 10
GT = 26

Students per Faculty member of NAE
Lehigh = 699
GT = 747

Average Math SAT score
Lehigh = 670
GT = 700

Acceptance Rates
Lehigh = 33%
GT = 59%

Enrollment Yields
Lehigh = 33%
GT = 40%

Alumni Giving Rates
Lehigh = 33%
GT = 31%

USNWR Undergraduate Engineering Rankings

GT = #5

GT = #50

Why would he need information on business? Also, the link you provided puts GT’s starting pay higher… but these are matters of maybe a grand or two, which really don’t seem to be that much of a differing factor. Also keep in mind that Lehigh is in PA and GT is in GA.

I’ll give the benefit of the doubt that JohnAdams is trying to show how GT is a big school and compare it to the small Lehigh which will get you more individual attention and things like that. Whether you like one or the other is your personal decision, but keep in mind that GT is highly ranked for a reason. Their research is high class, infact the other day I saw an article on Popular Science on a research breakthrough that came from GT electrical engineering department. It’s a hard place and freshman year a lot of people have a hard time toughing it out, but in the end it’s a great school and will prepare you to be a good engineer.

Either program looks like it can take you places if you work hard and do well. The 4 year graduation thing may seem a little daunting, but you can take a summer semester or two and finish on time. Are you concerned about finances? It seems if you’re out of state for both, GT might even be cheaper.

hadsed, I included Lehigh’s and GT’s undergraduate business ranking because the OP got accepted to this program:

[IBE home](http://www.lehigh.edu/~inibep/)

changes things a little, doesn’t it?

Tremendous Program

[IBE Curriculum Info](http://www.lehigh.edu/~inibep/curriculum.html)

He said he got into Northeastern’s honor’s program… in his original post.

hadsed, oh oK…thanks

so this isn’t his original post above?

Okay, my fault.

I think the OP needs to provide some more information (if he cares about this thread) about what kinds of environment he likes. Lehigh is clearly good, as JohnAdams pointed out, although it’s a small school. GT is better and bigger and is very well known. I still think GT is top tier while Lehigh… isn’t, but either way it probably ought to come down to personal preference and finances to the OP.

Lehigh has a long standing & well-respected engineering program. Do you know any engineers? Ask them–Lehigh is a respected name among those who know engineering.

One thing that is important to know about the IBE program, however, is that this 4-year program will NOT RESULT IN AN ENGINEERING DEGREE–you will not graduate as an “engineer”. From Lehigh’s website:

“The 4 year IBE degree is not an engineering degree, but rather is an accredited business degree. Assuming an IBE student majors in an engineering discipline, he or she is roughly 15 to 20 credits short (depending on major) of satisfying the requirements for an engineering degree. Thus a 4 year IBE student will finish a complete business degree and most of an engineering degree.” I think this is an important distinction–you need to add another year or so go get a real engineering degree.

I went to Northeastern, I’m a big fan of Lehigh and spent a week at Georgia Tech.

If the difference is roughly 60K more to attend GT over Northeastern, I’d be concerned.

If the money was equal, it would depend on fit more than anything else.

If the money were equal and the fit were equal - GT would be hard to pass up.

hadsed, how can you say Lehigh isnt top tier when you hadn’t even heard of it in your first post? US News and World Report puts it at the same rank as GT

I love how ignorant people are looking at the national ranking only when there’s Engineer program ranking on US News and World Report.

[Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs - Best Colleges - Education - US News and World Report](http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/spec-doct-engineering)

GT top 5 engineer school in the nation for undergraduate program and Lehigh, not even in top 10.

[World’s Best Universities: Engineering and IT - US News and World Report](http://www.usnews.com/articles/education/worlds-best-universities/2010/02/25/worlds-best-universities-engineering-and-it.html)

World rank GT #12 , Leihigh not even in the list of top 100 Engineer and IT university.

If you want to go to engineer school in Pennsylvania, I suggest you go CMU. CMU have world class #1 ranked Computer Science department that rivals MIT, Stanford, and Berkeley. If you couldn’t get admission to CMU… well, among those choice I suggest you go Georgia Tech but prepare to sit in library and spend all nighter a day or two before test if you want A in the class.

CSmajor, the OP is looking at combination business/engineering

GT has a better engineering school, but Lehigh is still considered a very good engineering school

Lehigh has a better business school

GT and Lehigh are both ranked #35 overall in the USNWR rankings of Major Research Universities

The difference now is whether the OP wants to go to a very large state school in Georgia with an 18:1 student/teacher ratio or a small private school in Pennsylvania with a 9:1 ratio and a much higher endowment/student ratio.

Total Undergraduate Students
Lehigh = 4,876
Georgia Tech = 12,973

Well I see that for MBA ranking,
Gatech is #26
Lehigh is not even in top #100

I can’t seem to get the undergraduate ranking for business but generally, isn’t the school with higher business degree like MBA considered highly when rating the business school overall? Or that only applies to engineer program…

CSmajor, let me help you with the undergraduate business ranking. I previously posted it in this thread:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/1064606395-post5.html

Business Week’s Undergraduate Business Programs Rankings
Lehigh = #27
GT = **#50 **

In addition, the OP mentioned that he was accepted into this tremendous honors business/engineering program at Lehigh, as I posted earlier:

http://www.lehigh.edu/~inibep/

I hope this helps…
