Interesting. My daughter has been on PrEP twice in her nursing career for several months each , once after a needle stick and another from being douse in bodily fluid from HIV + patients. That’s what the Infectious Diseases doc recommended. I wonder if these in inoculations would ever be a substitute.

As someone old enough to remember the really, really bad years of the HIV/AIDS crisis, this kind of news always brings tears to my eyes. Too late for so many, but what amazing breakthroughs have happened and how many lives have been and are being saved by them. I am so glad to see this.

On the other hand, I am concerned about disparities, both within the US and worldwide. For example, I’ve spent a good deal of time in Haiti where there are very high rates of HIV/AIDS and no access to the treatments available just an hour away in the US. Will these lifesaving preventatives and treatments ever reach them? Or will they be the privilege of people in wealthy nations?

A page about the cost of this drug:

Current US price is $42,250 for the first year of treatment of HIV. However, this is four doses (two initially, then one every six months), so the current US price of two doses looks like $21,125. Of course, anything health care tends to be more expensive in the US than anywhere else.
