I chose the essay where you invent a past for a gift you’ve received, and it’s turned out to be 1368 words long. Is that crazy long? I know it sounds like a lot but I need it to be that long - I invented a somewhat elaborate story about a kingdom in an alternate universe. In addition to the convoluted story though, there are some personal parts about a loved one, so there’s some insight into me and my life, and then a lot of my imagination. I think it’s pretty interesting, but that’s just me, I haven’t had anyone read it yet. It’s about four pages double-spaced, about three single-spaced. Do you think it’s too long? Because making it shorter would pretty much butcher my story, or at least butcher all the pretty language I worked so hard on.

I would show it to somebody (like an English teacher) and get their opinion on it. Sometimes, you think you have a wonderful story but it turns out a lot of it is “fluff.” Remember that the admissions officers have to read thousands of essays, and if you go too much over their recommended one page/ 500 words, then they probably wouldn’t be okay with that.
