Lesser-known music schools

Have any of you heard anything about CW Post @ Long Island University or Five Towns College? They are both colleges on Long Island that are apparently “known” for their music programs. I’ve never really heard much about either, except that the band directors at my high school liked to poke fun at Five Towns and call it “Five Clowns.” :P

I’d really like to stay local after community college I’m thinking. Does anyone know of any reputable schools with good music ed programs around Long Island? I’m thinking anywhere on the island + NYC. So that’d be like NYU, Hofstra, CW Post, FT, etc.

Also, would there be any disadvantage when applying to get a HS teaching position if I have a degree from one of these schools (CW Post/FT)?

Two CUNY options with respected music ed programs are Queens College & Hunter. The Copland School at Queens has a BA track leading to initial NY teacher certification, the Hunter option is a combo BAmusic with MA teacher certification. Check the specific requirements as a transfer. Other than NYU, I can’t comment on the others you name. While NYU is a good program, it is quite honestly not a cost effective option for most.

Lots of music teachers who end up teacking on Long Island have gotten their undergrad or masters from Hofstra and CW Post. They are certainly well thought of programs and allow you to student teach on Long Island.

I’d steer clear of Five Towns. My local high school has sent a few reasonably talented music students there, and their careers have gone nowhere – and I know at least one of them majored in Music Ed.
I’d give a serious look at Queens College. It came to our attention too late in our D’s applications process, and it seemed to be a pretty reputable program.

Five Towns only does elementary ed so if that’s what you want it would serve. I have not heard any great reports from Five Towns though.

Post and Hofstra has a good rep in music ed, I know several current students at both and they seem very happy with the programs. Both are very expensive.

Queens has a very good program in Music Ed as well.
