Hello everyone! Looking for a good book? (I know that lafalum84 is ;)) Tired of the heat? Back hurt from gardening? Then find a cozy, climate-controlled corner and curl up with our August selection, Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCann. Frank McCourt called McCanns National Book Award winner a blockbuster groundbreaking heartbreaking symphony of a novel.

Its available at the library, or in paperback for $9.00 at Amazon (only $6.75 in Kindle format).

Discussion will begin August 1st. I hope you are all having a great summer!

What a great choice! As I mentioned a couple of times on the best book thread, it’s one of the best books I’ve ever read and I’m an avid reader who reads about 75-100 books a year. Beautifully written! I’ve read it twice and have bought a copy this year for everyone I know who loves to read. Enjoy!

Sounds good. I am annoyed as my younger D borrowed my Kindle and it has gone missing in the abyss that is her bedroom. She has looked and I have looked and we have not found it yet.

Mary13, you’re back and your creative juices are flowing !
Alwaysamom your testimony is convincing!
Looking forward to hearing from you, Booklady, Garland and others who have read this book when the discussion starts in August.

Just bumping this thread. With the intense heat wave hitting the east coast, some CCers may want to pick up this book. Thank you, Booklady for suggesting this one.

I am almost finished and it is a powerhouse, and not something you will want to read quickly a couple days before the book discussion.

I don’t have a copy of the book yet, so I amused myself and family with the DVD Man on Wire. It won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2009 - and I’ve been wanting to watch it. :)

Thanks for bumping, SJCM. I will be starting the book this week. I am staying away from book reviews, and will also save ignatius’ links for later. I decided I want to go into the book knowing nothing at all about the plot or the historical incident that it’s built around.

^^^^ I did the exact thing with this book, Mary.
Didn’t do ANY background at all,and let the book flow over me. Can’t wait to hear what everyone has to say about it.

I’m so glad to hear that others love this book. SJCM, it’s interesting to me that you approached it that way, as it was the opposite for me. I already knew about the incident and the whole milieu of the book before I read it, having grown up in NYC in the '60s and '70s. One of the reasons I loved reading it is that McCann has captured that time and place so perfectly, both the beautiful and ugly (of which there were many) aspects of it all.

I haven’t joined the book club up until now, but started reading this book (on Kindle) while on vacation last week so I’m in and looking forward to the discussion. Really enjoying it so far.

Kindle is still missing. I am holding $200 of D’s birthday money in ransom. I have also searched her room and I haven’t found it. She is hoping it didn’t accidentally end up in the trash.

Sounds interesting! I’m in. (I will probably also read The Elegance of the Hedgehog at some point . . . perhaps after taking 4 or 5 years of French . . . a few years after I’ve retired . . . and even then, that’s only a “probably,” based on the comments on the June thread.)

^ I imagine the CC “Advanced Search” feature will still be around after you retire…You can resurrect the Elegance thread in another decade or two and post your comments—in French, of course!
