Sometimes a room only lit by lamps can feel a bit too cavelike. I put dimmers on all the lights on the ground floor including the kitchen. Our living room is just a little too small, so we don’t really have room for end tables on our sofa. Otherwise I’d have more lamps. We have a really boring standing lamp at one end of it though.
@Onward, D1 would die for that light fixture. She just loves the Edison style bulbs. She’s renting, so couldn’t have that fixture, but she has a tall standing lamp with those bulbs.
@mathmom, I have been adding dimmers to all my recessed lighting. I can even adjust them with my iphone, which makes for funny times messing with DH in his office at night. 
It does make a big difference. But whenever I dim them, they make a kind of buzzing sound. Have you experienced that?
Light - I can’t live without it! You know when you go by a house and it’s dark except for the light from the television? That will never be me. I NEED light! We have lots of windows so lots of natural light but I too like lamps - but a variety. Table lamps, floor lamps, wall lamps that swing out. So many cute lamps out there!

Someone upthread mentioned table lamps. I have only table lamps (and a very unnoticeable floor lamp) in my living room. IMO, Simon Pearce has the most beautiful, unobtrusive lamps I’ve ever seen. I have three of the clear glass ones, and am probably going to buy a fourth shortly. Like these:

I really don’t like lamps that are too decorative. I want them to blend in and just do their job of providing light.

Circa Lighting has some really beautiful table lamps.
My newest light is a pendant in foyer. It’s hammered brass. I bought it at capital lighting, but I can’t find it there to,post a link.
@Nrdsb4 - every room in the house has ceiling lights, so the lamp will be just an accent piece. In addition to simply being pretty, DNA double helix is somewhat symbolic because we both worked in biotech.

It took me years to find the foyer light and a new dining room light. My male friend was visiting and was all to eager to help. He went straight to the 2 lights.
I love the DNA lamp. It would fit well in my office.
I have both ceiling pots and lamps. My pots are all on dimmers, too, as are the pendant lights I have in my dining room…

It was not the typical “high end contractor grade” fixture found in many new houses around here. I asked the realtor where they got it, but she had no idea. Now I know.

We have dimmers on just about everything but we also have that faint buzzing noise in many of the rooms. I’m very sensitive to that kind of noise so I tend to not use them unless its to set a mood at a party when there is enough regular noise going on that the buzzing isn’t noticeable.
Regarding the buzzing
If LED bulbs, there are two types of bulbs. You have to buy special Dimmable (slightly higher cost) bulbs. Regular LED bulbs cannot dim and make noise and fail quickly
Flourescent bulbs or fixtures should not be on any dimming switch mechanism
Lighting fixtures are my favorite part of design. It’s like the jewelry in the room.
Candice Olson had fabulous lighting in her rooms. In fact, she had fabulous everything in her designs. I loved her fabric choices
We replaced a couple of dimmers prior to doing our big reno years ago. These were here when we bought the house. The electrician said that the dimmers that buzz, or hum as he called it, are usually inexpensive/low quality dimmers. He also told us that they often make the switch plate heat up. So it can be a safety hazard if that is the case.
IMO, fluorescent bulbs have no place in a home.
CFLs were as big of a scam as Enron. Not really, but close enough.
