I’ll be a senior in the fall.
Thinking of Psychology as my major.

Schools I’m thinking of applying to:
NC State
UNC-Chapel Hill (reach, I know…)
UNC-G (I just like the town)
UNC-W
Wake Forest (yet another reach…)

Stats:
3.5 Unweighted GPA
4.2 Weighted
Ranked 30 out of about 500 students in my class
(Top 10%)
All Honors Core Classes

AP’s:
Bio (1) - 10th grade
European History (2) - 10th grade
English Lang & Comp (pending results in July) - 11th Grade

Senior Year Schedule:
Honors English IV (required)
AP Calculus AB
Honors US Government
AP Human Geography
AP English Lit
Honors Med Science II
Honors Spanish III
Interning for a Biology teacher (thinking of changing to Theatre II)

EC’s & Such:
Beta Club (since 9th grade) (also many volunteer hours with that)
Race Unity Club (since 10th grade…secretary Junior Year)
Pretty significant role in 11th Grade theatre production.

Pretty much trying to stay In-State. Any other application suggestions? What are my chances at these schools? If you need any other stats, lemme know. I tried to be thorough.

Also meant to mention:
I’m African-American
& my SAT scores:
1790
(540 math, 620 Reading, 630 Writing)

PS, any schedule changes you can think of? AP Chem perhaps? Anatomy? HELP!!

I like your username.

Thanks… I don’t really stab bunnies though. I enjoy them :D

Are there any good reasons for those AP scores?

There are reasons, but they’re not good.
AP Euro was my first AP class. Nobody took it seriously, the teacher joked around a lot (moved a test so he could play Call of Duty).
AP Bio was my second. I had a great teacher, I just didn’t apply myself.
I do, however feel pretty confident about my AP English scores that I’ll get in July.

Those AP scores could be your downfall. Where I come from, a 4 on an AP test is BELOW AVERAGE because most people get 5s. Scores below a 4 are almost unheard of. Your school could be different though.

I come from a school where you can rob a bank on Friday nights because everybody is at the football stadium. Typical southern town. To put it simply, my AP scores are average for here. Like I said, I’m taking them more seriously now. So, my scores aside, what do you think?

I’d work harder on those grades to increase your chances, if I were you. Re your AP scores—no, those aren’t competitive at all, to put it mildly. Sorry that things didn’t work out for you, though, with that European History teacher. Maybe if you take other APs, that might bump things up? Selective colleges want to see 4s and 5s, nothing less.

You’re going for state colleges, so I’m guessing that you probably won’t have too many issues getting into at least ONE of them if you step up your game a bit.

Good luck! :)

well also remember that AP scores are self-reported and colleges don’t HAVE to see any of them… The title of this thread is a bit blunt and rude but I’ll let it pass… you’ll get your payback once you graduate a psychology major.

@saveyourserpent its cool. I fully intend on doing MUCH better on my other AP tests. I’ve seen kids get into some of those schools (save wake & chapel hill) with worse grades than me… But I’m definitely working harder these days. They’ll see the improvement from Sophomore to Junior Year. Thanks so much!

@Interficio On my high school transcript, they show them. Probably other schools as well. Obviously they would wonder what’s up if I don’t report 2 scores. The title of this thread is NOT blunt or rude. It’s DIFFERENT, something lots of people on here know nothing about. Should I get down on my hands and knees and beg? You’re obviously one of those close-minded types, aren’t you? But you’ll get YOUR payback when I’m your psychiatrist.

Okay let’s be real here.
AP scores are not a big deal. Most colleges won’t give you credit for it any way. Having an A or a B in and AP class while getting a 1 or a 2 on the exam suggests some grade inflation but they seriously don’t really help or hurt you. I’m not really sure why everyone is so stuck on them.

It’s the SAT score that works against you.
BUT Wake is Test optional so write good essay and you have a decent chance, and the rest are both instate and not too difficult to get into, all of this couple with your URM status leads me to believe that UNC-W,G,and NCstate are completely possible in your case, UNC Chapel Hill is a Reach, and Wake is a reach, but it’s possible because you don’t have to show then your test scores.

I see you getting into AT LEAST one or two.
But what do I know? I’m only a High School-er in the same boat as you are!
But Good Luck! I wish you College Happiness!

:P chilllllll I was just playing around. I’ve taken AP psych, I’m ALREADY plenty aware of my issues, LOL. I assume you’re in-state? That will help. Have you looked at any OOS schools?

While a “low” AP score such as 3 might not hurt, a !1! most likely will. Unless he incorrectly gridded his answers or something, that 1 will look very bad. OP, you should try to retake the APs or opt for a manual reading of your AP tests because it’s very possible that an error was made while grading your tests.

@MollyBloom You’re right about the AP test thing. I don’t really get why people are so crazy about them. I ended up with B’s in those 2 classes. I finished with an A in English. My scores are pretty great compared to my classmates. I plan to take it one more time in the fall, just to see if I can get over 1800. Thanks so much! You really helped me put things in perspective.

@Interficio I speak fluent sarcasm. No sweat. Also, I haven’t given much thought to OOS schools. I’d like to stay in the southeast, any suggestions on other schools I could consider?

I am not a he, I’m a female. I’m not retaking the tests. I’d have to pay money I don’t have. It’s also very possible that I hate biology. Just a thought, lol. I’m not trying to get college credit for either test.

Ahem…perhaps a few more opinions here…
