The asterisks indicate schools that I am not removing. If you remove Pitt, you need to take out CMU as well.

Everyone remove two.

Well, I don’t see why you would remove Carnegie if you removed Pitt. Here is my line of thinking: with your great stats, you are a lock for Tulsa, Wisconsin, Pitt, PSU, and Minnesota. You already claim that you are definitely applying to Tulsa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. As long as you are happy with that list, those can surely be safety schools. Even if you are OOS, I would put Michigan (which is by far the best public on your list) as a safety/match. I would choose Michigan over any of those publics any day, and you are studying engineering to boot! One of the best engineering programs around with a great business school.

That’s why I would definitely consider taking off Pitt and Penn State which you stated are up in the air in terms of applying or not. I don’t see why you wouldn’t keep CMU since you want to go into engineering and business. Top undergraduate programs in both of those areas!

Honestly though, you might even want to look into applying to an additional school or two. With your stats, you have many good schools to choose from. I know you didn’t want to add any schools, but you only have one shot! Why not go for it?

Pitt has an easy application, I would very likely be admitted, and a probable full-tuition scholarship just sweetens the deal. Those are not reasons to like the school per se, but they don’t exactly make me see much benefit to removing it. I have to fly a long way to visit any of these schools, so if I might be in Pittsburgh anyway to see CMU it doesn’t seem smart to take off Pitt.

Michigan seems like a very bad value to me when compared to other similar large publics. Otherwise, I like the school fairly well.

I’d be willing to settle for these ten, but narrowing it down to eight would be nice.

Thanks very much for the opinion.

agree with this analysis, Tinfoyl! And op, are you going to visit before or after applying? If before, make the decision after the visits.

^I agree w/ Tinfoyl on her post here, except I think you already have a really nice list of schools and don’t need any more. The “value” for OOS students can obviously be debated, but it’s hard to have everything and besides that one issue it fits your bill (pun un-intended)…

^^I will not be visiting until well after applying.

^ Thanks for the thoughts.
