Let's name the royal baby!

My cousin invited the Queen to her wedding. She sent her regrets - along with a gracious note and a nice gift. She says she’s actually a sweet lady who comes across as serious because she must be so proper at all times.

“I think we’re all going to be invited then. Did you get your mail yet?”

We’ll need to go hat shopping. :)

Louis wouldn’t be so bad, except that I think they pronounce it Loo-EE, not Loo-IS. But it doesn’t matter; the only time middle names get used are christening, marriage, and coronation.

I also picked George early on because “Kate is all about pleasing the Queen.” But, full disclosure, I later said:

:p

I got George right, but it was sort of obvious. It was the name of the last male sovereign of the UK, and he was a pretty decent guy. I suspect that Queen Elizabeth is pleased that William and Kate have honored her dad in this way.

But ironically, this choice will probably postpone the reign of King George VII. I have read that Prince Charles had thought of taking the name George as his regnal name when he becomes king. Obviously, he won’t do that now. It would seem sort of stupid (not that Charles isn’t capable of acting stupid, but that’s another conversation). So we’ll have to wait an extra two generations before there’s another King George.

I certainly hope that Charles doesn’t become King Charles - cause then all I will think about is Spaniels.

What a boring name choice. I hope when he becomes King he uses Alexander instead, it’s much nicer. Although I prefer the nordic version, Aleksander.

Don’t forget his surname:

George Alexander Louis Mountbatten-Windsor

I believe Queen Elizabeth only has three names: Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor (Windsor being the surname).

Well… I guess I was 2/3 correct in my previous post #190:

If a boy I think George will be involved as well as a name associated with Earl Mountbatten, Prince Phillip’s Uncle who was killed in an IRA bombing (featured in the Thatcher movie) and was very close with Prince Charles.

Actually Alexander was a name that I had thought about as I figured that in addition to the traditional names they might look for something more contemporary and Alexander does fit that bill although it’s been popular for the past 30 years. I stll think if baby # 2 or #3 is a girl, Diana will be part of the name but not the first name.

I bet George is going to grow up to be a very tall man. I read somewhere that when he ascends, William will be the tallest British monarch in history.

He doesn’t need to become King George. The Queen’s father was Albert Frederick Arthur George and became King George VI. So maybe George Alexander Louis will be King Alexander.

Probably not King Louis, though. Sounds too French, and besides it brings up bad memories of both regal excess and regicide.

I believe Alexander/Alexandra is a long-time family name. I thought it was in the names woof Victoria, Elizabeth and also Elizabeth’s cousin. I don’t remember if the men carry it though.

Just need to add that, with no credentials, information, or valid reason for posting at all, I did say that George wasn’t weird name at all, and that I wanted him to be Prince Lewis (which, lets be honest, is just another version of Louis!) :)

I never used to like the name Louis until I started watching Louis C.K. He’s kind of cool and I kind of like the name now. George , Alexander, and Louis are all good, solid names.

I think the best-known Alexandra was Queen Alexandra (of Denmark), the wife of Edward VII and the mother of George V.

Beat me to it, Donna! :)

I’m sorry they didn’t pick James.

Consolation, I read somewhere that James is the name of Kate’s brother so they may have stayed away from it so that he would be free to use it for his own family.

I was hoping for George from the beginning. It’s a nice traditional name. I have no special ties to the name George, I just like it.

I also like Alexander and Louis. William and Kate made a great choice.

I think James is the best name ever. But I’m glad they didn’t use it.

I like James too. It was my grandfather’s name. But, in addition to being the name of Kate’s brother, it is also the name of Prince Edward 's son, who was just born in 2007.

That’s one option, but as with most things royal, the rules are a bit opaque to us colonists. This is from the royal family’s website:

Since William, and now baby George, are “other than,” there are apparently 3 choices for the baby’s surname – if they choose to use one at all, which isn’t required:
