Well it depends in what subject. Of course a LAC cannot compete with Caltech in the sciences or engineering but in the social sciences and humanities I would say they can compete and provide a better education. Good point alwaysleah, that is a better way to think about it. I do not prefer LACs or Universities either way but as someone pointed out so clearly, they do get a lot of hate on here.

This is flat out wrong. LACs provide a well rounded education. Science is a liberal art, just as the humanities are. The difference between a LAC and a university is that LACs emphasize general education requirements, usually have smaller course offerings/are smaller, and don’t have graduate schools.

Comparing Caltech to “LACs” isn’t very accurate; it’s cherry picking. Of course Caltech is a leader in science/engineering, but that’s among LACs AND universities. Swarthmore has an engineering program that can rival any universities’ and many other LACs have excellent science programs with great grad school placement. Many universities do the same. You have to compare apples to apples - when comparing equivalent LACs/universities, it’s not about whether it’s science (which is a liberal art) or humanities, it’s about the relative pros/cons of each school. It’s not like LACs have everyone studying humanities and completely ignore the other liberal arts.
