Let's talk about housing!

@ziveli513 The SLO my son applied to allows them to stay all 4 years if they want. So space is actually limited to rooms that upperclassmen give up.

It’s the Earth and Mineral Science SLO in Irvin Hall (West area).

@sophley @STEM2017 thank you both
Staying on campus is appealing for the reasons you list Sophley, especially at least sophomore year

Does East have renovated housing for triples? The housing page shows renovated triples but doesn’t specify if they are in East. Also does anyone have any experience with a triple?
Thanks!

Will I have a hard time getting my first choice dorm of a double in Pollock? Specifically Discover house SLO in Beaver? I put in my deposit in the first week of March.

Could someone tell me which hall in West Halls have ‘single room with bath’? Planning to put deposit today so is it too late to have a chance at getting a single room? This is for a international student who prefers to have a single room with bath. Any other locations where getting a single room with bath be easier?

CS Major.

Thanks

@xceptionunhandle You cannot specify which dorm you want - you only choose an area.

And, honestly, the odds of getting a single - as a freshman - is virtually slim to none. The only way you could possibly get a single is if there is some demonstrated medical need. And even then, I think it would be tough. I don’t know of any freshmen with a single.

A single with bath? I don’t know if they even exist. If they do, they have probably been selected by an upperclassman (who have already chosen or are going through the process right now).

As a freshman, I actually would not encourage a single. There are times that the adjustment is hard and there is comfort in seeing other people. It is too easy to keep your door closed and not really make friends.

I would encourage you to call housing if it is really important and ask these questions.

@lucyvanpelt Thank you for your response and the advice. Student prefers to have a single room so that when it’s time to study, there are no distractions. Otherwise, socializing is, as you pointed out, very important especially for an international student.

I will give housing a call on Monday and see what they have to say.

As was mentioned, a single, let alone the very few singles w a bathroom (there aremaybe a dozen in West and they are almost all for the RAs) are not going to go to a freshman unless they have a dire medical condition and all the documentation to go with it, submitted earlier than late March.

You might be better off choosing North. The rooms are all 2-students per room, set up in “suites” of 2 rooms with a small entryway and a bathroom to share. It is the smallest housing area and has a new dorm. Many SLOs but not exclsuively so, known as the quietest area and there are plenty of freshmen who get in there.

p.s.

If you request a single in West as your first priority, and you don’t get that ( which is likely) the system will default to whatever it has that is closest to your second choice. Keep in mind that in late March, things have started to fill up and your choices are limited.

@greenbutton

Thank you. Very helpful.

Do you know if they have single rooms in Pollock? It is for medical reasons.

My son finally accepted his offer last night and signed up for housing to room with a friend. We got a confirmation that his housing contract was “accepted,” but does that mean he will definitely be in permanent and not supplemental housing? I know they say as long as you sign up by April 1st you’re good, but wasn’t sure if that was a guarantee or just a probability, and I remember a couple years ago when they “overbooked” and were offering students money to go to branches their first year to free up space in the dorms.

@OnHisWay , this is such an odd year for admissions and I can’t imagine PSU has a good grasp of what their net yield will look like, which makes predicting housing a tad tough. Just because PSU accepted the housing contract doesn’t mean he was assigned a double room. It just means PSU acknowledges that you want to live on campus, so there is a small possibility he could get supplemental, but odds are pretty small since it’s still before April 1. You’ll find out in July, I believe. FYI…lots of kids (especially the guys) love supplemental housing. Sounds strange, I know. But PSU will start pulling kids from supplemental and reassigning them to regular doubles pretty quickly. The net result will be a few kids left in these enormous, spacious rooms – some even with their own bathrooms. In most buildings, supplemental housing is nothing more than a oversized, converted study lounge. Some kids refuse to move out because they like living in the social hot spot on the floor. Imagine a room for 6 or 8 students…with only 3 guys left. Talk about spreading out!

Thanks for the info, @Sophley! This does seem to be a crazy year for admissions. I’m not too concerned with the supplemental issue (I was supposed to be in supplemental initially when I was there 32 years ago, but got assigned a dorm the week before classes started), just hoping he and his buddy are still able to room together. And it does sound like supplemental housing is much nicer now than it was back then.

@OnHisWay, I forgot which house area has it, but some supplementals are even two-stories.

Yes google Onward State trampoline supplemental to see the two story with a trampoline inside.

How bad are the Ritner dorms in Pollock for freshmen?

what are my chances of getting East Halls renovated if I submitted my housing contract last week?

I’m an incoming freshman that’s really interested in east ren. What are my chances of getting placed there after committing on March 8th, 2019 and my roommate committing sometime mid-late February?

So when exactly do the freshman find out what housing they got?
