Let's talk about housing!

If someone accepted their offer of admission in December and the roommate they request has accepted their offer of admission in March, which acceptance date is used when housing makes the dorm assignments?

@Beachdays I’d think December would get the priority

@Beachdays They will use the date for the earlier acceptance. This happened with my daughter. She deposited two months before her roommate, so they got my daughters preferences.

THIS IS FROM THE PENN STATE WEBSITE REGARDING FIRST YEAR HOUSING:

Penn State recognizes that many students may have an interest in rooming with a friend, and offer the opportunity for a student to list another person as a roommate request. Roommate requests must be mutual - meaning, both students must indicate the other student’s Penn State Access Account (i.e. abc123) as a preference on the Housing and Food Services (HFS) Contract. Each student is responsible for verifying that the other student’s information listed is correct, and that the record is displaying before the modification deadline of May 15.
The following timeline is used for processing mutual roommate requests:
*Students who both accept the offer of admission before April 1 will be assigned together in regular housing in a traditional or renovated residence hall (depending upon space available and preferences indicated).
*If one student has accepted the offer of admission before April 1, but the other student accepted after April 1, the students must decide to either be assigned together in supplemental housing or forgo the mutual roommate request and be assigned based on each students’ individual preferences and when the offer was accepted.
*Students who both accept the offer of admission after April 1 may be assigned together in supplemental housing.

my daughter accepted her offer of admission late February - selected East renovated or North renovated. Her potential roommate accepted early April. When daughter entered roommate on housing site she got a pop up that basically asked if she’d be willing to accept supplemental housing being roommate accepted after April 1. She checked off “no”. If she keeps potential roommates name on her housing request will she lose her request for E/N renovated??? Is there an option for her to put her location request ahead of roommate selection. (called housing and they said they were not to the point of supplemental housing yet anyway but I’m afraid she may end up somewhere other than her desired E/N renovated due to potential roommates later accepted admissions date and due to some conflicting answers from housing. Created an awkward situation - she doesn’t want to hurt the potential roommates feelings!

Just came from D19’s NSO. They said if your student placed their housing deposit before mid-February they will be assigned to renovated East Halls. They did not supply an exact date.

@SAD1010 Did they say anything about the other halls and the likelihood of getting it? Specifically Pollock.

@LM3232 They only spoke specifically about the renovated halls because most students requested renovated. Just that the cut off for those dorms was set at mid-February.

@SAD1010 How was NSO, from a parent’s perspective? Getting excited?

@STEM2017 I like your profile pic! It will be very informative for new PSU parents. However, I found it a little boring but did learn that a few things changed this year so I’m happy I attended.

Attended last year and this year it was pretty much identical-)yep have back to back… so we didn’t sit through all the parents sessions (shopped, etc). However I am always impressed with how much info is provided to new students/parents. If a parent is unable to attend, their student will be able to provide them with a parent catalog (every student receives one for parent and student). The catalog has everything that is being discussed at NSO and then some!
