Let's Talk About the Kardashians

Not to give anyone in particular a hard time, but it’s staggering how many people in this country equate the ability to monetize notoriety (or infamy)with talent. I just can not wrap my mind around it.

Actually, no one is equating the ability to make a buck with talent. And, as far as I know, GP’s parents are famous, somewhat, so if you are going to hold her up as a woman who made it the top with talent you might want to find an example of someone who made it only with talent not connections.

As if acting takes real “talent” but I don’t want to quibble.

I’ll give the K’s credit for the ability to make a buck. No apologies. Hell, if only they had more talent God only knows where they could go.

Yes, it does take talent to do well. How is this even being debated?

I’m reminded of this every time I watch Modern Family and note that some of the young actors have immense talent and others are so bad I can practically see their cue cards in front of them. Good actors make you forget that they are acting. They draw you in and you almost forget you are watching fiction. Bad actors keep you constantly aware that they are “acting”. They are stiff, lack the range of emotions real people in real situations display and make it impossible to suspend your disbelief.

I don’t know PG in real life, but I’ve read enough of her posts to know that she’s likely the last person to be jealous of the K’s.

“As if acting takes real “talent” but I don’t want to quibble.”

You know something? I went to a university that has a major theater program. And when I was 18, 19, 20 years old and stupid as we all are at that age, I thought it was “easy” - all they had to do say a bunch of lines, no big deal, I was solving differential equations or whatever. And then I grew up. It absolutely takes a combination of talent and hard work.

And yes, I’m sure GP was helped by having famous parents but that’s not even the point. Same with Angelina Jolie, but these women have won major awards for their acting and, whether or not you care for them in their personal lives, you have to respect the talent and hard work that goes behind that.

Indeed, as much as I’m not a personal fan of Kanye West, I can’t deny that at least he put in the effort to actually … you know, become a singer / musician / producer. The Kardashians are merely famous for being famous.

“I’ll give the K’s credit for the ability to make a buck. No apologies.”

Well, this is the whole point. Some of us don’t consider that a “talent” worth having. Unlike other talents worth having (and getting public accolade for) – singing, dancing, being a fashion designer, acting, whatever.

Yes, acting does take talent. (You were kidding about that, right, @GoNoles85?) And yes, Gwyneth Paltrow has it. She may not be Kate Winslet, Cate Blanchett, or Marion Cotillard, but she has given good, even very good, performances over a 20-year career.

People who get to star in movies usually have talent, because who’s going to risk upwards of $25 million on a star without talent? People who get to star in reality series might have performing talent, but what they really need is a talent for notoriety.

And just because someone doesn’t like a public figure (or family of them) doesn’t mean that person is envious of the family. I don’t think much of the Kardashians in both senses of the word “much.” They aren’t important to me, and I see nothing to admire about them, either.
