I’ve never posted in the Parent Cafe, but I thought it might be an interesting diversion to talk about our favorite foods. I just went shopping at Wegman’s yesterday and discovered a new variety of apple I had never seen before. It’s called a SweeTango. It’s a cross between a Honey Crisp and Zestar. Let me tell you, this apple is absolutely delicious! If you get a chance to try it, you must.

Hmmm, let me think of some other favorites. If you shop at Trader Joes, I highly recommend their Cinnamon Roll Bread. We toast it and have it with butter for breakfast. I have tried just about every kind of cinnamon bread I could find in stores (as well as Panera) and this is THE best. Their Dark Chocolate Sea Salt Caramels are to die for. My H and I also love their Mandarin Orange Chicken which is a frozen entree. They have a fabulous Corn Bread Mix which has a touch of sweetness and kernels of corn in it.

If you crave a bit of chocolate after dinner, our family always goes for Lindt Lindor Chocolate Truffles in assorted flavors.

Please continue to add to my list. I’m looking for new things to try out.

If you have a Harris Teeter grocery store nearby, try their 7 Layer Mexican Bean Dip. They also sell Robert’s Famous Chicken Salad which comes from Robert’s Market in Wrightsville Beach, NC.

FAVORITE THING TO EAT IN THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD: Sweet Shrimp (my sushi chef keeps them live and fries the heads) If they were not so expensive I would eat those fried heads everyday.

I love Greek yogurt. Not to mention Ben and Jerry’s coffee health bar crunch. Those salted caramels from TJs are amazing as are there pb cups. No Wegmans or Harris Teeter here so I’m out of luck on those items.

Chobani yogurt with my homemade granola on top - so good.

Day old French bread, drizzled with olive oil and grilled, then spread with goat cheese and a tad of fig preserves. Good in a salty with sweet way.

Anything salted and caramel is always good.

Salted caramels are relatively easy and cheap to make. For the last few years I have made a variety of caramels as gifts for the holidays. The family favorite is home-made marshmallows dipped in salted caramel. YOWZA!

Starbucks is carrying a small chocolate salted caramel thingie right now that is very good and I like that it doesn’t have 400 calories like everything else.

I made an appetizer recently that was super-easy and everyone loved. Take small pitas, put a little bit of good olive oil and a slice of fresh mozzarella on them, sprinkle liberally with zahtar (middle east spice mix) and heat in a 400 degree oven until the cheese is melted.

I love fig preserves the standard way with Manchego or other similar cheeses.

H and I have a new favorite food we’ve been having during our “empty nest” happy hours. Pick a few jalapenos from the garden, cut them lengthwise, scoop out the seeds/membranes, fill with cream cheese, wrap with bacon, and pop in the oven until the bacon’s cooked.

Also I love Palmetto Pimiento cheese, the jalapeno kind…mmmm, but I can only get it while visiting MIL…it’s almost worth it ;)
