Let's Talk Nail Colors

I rarely wear polish on my fingernails, but I like to have fun with color on my toes. I currently have orange polish on my toes (they were purple before that) and plan to switch to a mint green next time. I do this year round because my toes show at yoga.

I tend to use either OPI Dutch Tulips or Cajun Shrimp on my toenails (except during college football season when I paint my toenails purple). OPI has a new color called “Got Myself Into a Jam-Balaya” that I’m going try on my toes for a change. I keep my fingernails short and use one coat of a sheer color like OPI Bubble Bath.

I like that Dutch Tulips…I think I’m going to have to buy it. It looks like it would go red, pinks, even some corals.

The Essie one on my toes right now is called Lilacism, and it works remarkably well on pale skin. Sometimes I’ll put a glitter topcoat on it if I’m thinking more fun less chic, but it’s very subtle and elegant on its own.

Lincoln Park After Dark is an amazing one-I wish they made it in gel.

I love Polish but am very lazy, so I love Incoco nail polish straps. They go on easy and last forever, up to two weeks. I really love their patterned strips the best.
Otherwise I love corals and reds, and normally have a different shades on my toes.

I never do my fingernails but my toes are currently panted purple in honor of Prince.

Inspired by this thread and the strips suggestion I bought incoco at walmart today as I am traveling and in a hotel room with time on my hands. My nails have never looked so good. Happy go lucky pinkish coral. I have to say pretty amazing product.

I’m telling you…OPI Dutch Tulips goes with any color clothing or shoes. It’s amazing.

Agree with toenails only…current favorite- OPI Just Lanai-ing Around

I don’t wear toenail polish; some of my toenails are so tiny it just looks ridiculous. My fingernails grow very long if I’m not paying attention and occasionally I will polish them before I cut them off. I usually favor brick reds but have been known to use royal blue or grey, whatever strikes my fancy. But I do it myself. The idea of letting someone else mess with my nails gives me the willies.

I have lousy fingernails that break easily, usually down to the quick, if I don’t keep them short. Decades ago, when I worked in Manhattan, I got wraps at an exceeding inexpensive Korean nail salon near my office. That enabled me to have nice nails…but I eventually got a fungus under one and so quit.

In the last few years I’ve started having a pedicure as sandal season approaches. I usually don’t do my fingernails, because they last like two days, and gel destroys my already weak nails. I am absolutely incapable of doing my own decently.

Last year I went for a pale green, which I really liked.

“…I eventually got a fungus under one and so quit.”

This is what keeps me out of nail salons. The pedicure baths especially. I can do a decent job with my toenails. Painting fingernails is an exercise in futility for me… because my name is Bunsen.

That Dutch Tulips color is really nice.

Last fall, I was in a wedding and we all got manicures. I went with a color I’d never normally do … it was a tan with a glittery tint. I really liked it and kept that for months. I’ve switched to purple. I’ve worn purple for years because it goes with my favorite sports team. My current one isn’t too pastel-y – I love the color – but it’s a cheap brand and chips too easily. I’ve got to find something else.

Wraps vs strips? The difference? One more likely to get nail fungus? Doing it at home seems safer. Am I off on this? The strips are straight nail polish, seem innocent enough.

I get manicures and pedicures regularly and I like to change it up a bit but I have some favorites… Fishnet Stockings, Really Red, Garnet. I used to use both Ballet Slippers and Limousine but I haven’t gotten to the lighter paler nails yet this year. I recently went with grey nails and used Chinchilla. It matched my outfit for the seder perfectly but I would do a lighter grey in the warmer weather.

Is your last name Honeydew? Because that would be awesome.

@Consolation , have you tried taking biotin? It works really well with regards to getting hair and fingernails to grow. Plus I think it is fairly harmless as a supplement.

Lol. The name implies that I am a chemist - lab solvents like acetone and ethyl acetate come in 1 gallon bottles, not in puny nail polish remover bottles. Because I used to work with massive quantities of those and other polish-dissolving solvents, I have never developed the habit of getting my nails done. They looks good until the first drop of acetone lands on them…

My nails aren’t in very good shape and I’ve never had a manicure or pedicure. I do my own nails when I feel like it, and generally do both fingers and toes. My favorite color for summer was discontinued a while back - I did stock up from Amazon once it was no longer in the stores. It’s called Ocean http://www.amazon.com/Revlon-Top-Speed-Ocean-0-5-Ounce/dp/B004GTKXF8 and it really is the color of the ocean. I went on a cruise with my mom a few years ago and was floating in the water in Aruba and noticed my nails were disappearing into the water - they were the exact same color as the ocean! So truth in advertising.

My favorite winter color is the same discontinued brand but silver: http://www.amazon.com/Revlon-Speed-Enamel-Sterling-Fluid/dp/B005B5SDIK It looks great with silver rings.

And finally, when I want something on my nails but don’t want anyone to notice them I use this Top Speed color: http://www.amazon.com/Revlon-Speed-Sheer-Pearl-0-5-Ounce/dp/B004GTOR3M It’s almost a natural nail color with a hint of pink and a nice sheen.

Incidentally, my nails improved after we moved from Chicago to San Diego. I researched a bit and learned that nail health is related to vitamin D deficiency. So now when I’m sunbathing I claim I need the sunshine for my nails.

I just bought Essie Haute in the Heat; it’s a pinkish red that isn’t quite as dark as my favorite, OPI Red.

Re nail health: I swear by Vitafusion Women’s gummy vitamins (“Energy, Metabolism and Bone Support”) that you can buy at Costco. My nails are definitely stronger and longer since I started taking those.

My nails looked the best while I was pregnant…and NO I don’t think it was hormones. I think it was those HUGE prenatal vitamins!!
