Greetings CC Community!
Remember when schools would boast about having better light projectors and those new-fangled SmartBoards?? Well nowadays, schools are boasting about 3D printers and high-tech research labs open to their students for use. Personally, I believe technology availability and how instructors integrate it into coursework is very important. Especially if the price tag of the school is high.
So here’s a few questions concerning tech @ colleges:
- When touring a school, what type of tech should one be looking out for? Especially in today’s age?
- Does your college have a place where students can go for tech problems? Are the services free? How often do you use those services?
- Does your college allow you to rent out electronics such a laptops, cameras, tablets, ect.?
- Are 3D printers really all that? (Because it seems like every place wants to brag about how they have one, two, three of these puppies and they seem to be becoming more commonplace.) Does your college have 3D printers available for student use? Are they free to use or do you have to pay for the supplies? (For example, my high school has three pretty nice quality 3D printers but they are used almost exclusively by one teacher for one single course and yet my school brags about them all the time.)
- Research Labs. Are they open to undergrads? If so, under what parameters? If you were to rate the quality of the facility, would you give it five out of five stars?
- How do your professors/instructors utilize technology in your courses? Would you consider it helpful or a hassle?
- Is there some type of tech that your school boasted about to you as a prospective student that ended up being lame/hard to access/unhelpful?
- Wifi and Ethernet. Is it free at your school? Can you find internet access most anywhere on campus or only in a few golden spots? How would you rate the internet speed?
If you have something to say about the technology (or lack thereof) at your school, please speak on it! Don’t forget to name which school you go to!
