Letter explaining my D in AP PHysics

What information should it include? can someone help me with the style of writing (formal, informal, etc.) and where do i send it to? (the office of admissions)? thanks for your help

No clue but I’m interested in responses. My daughter got a C in AB Physics at the end of her sophomore year. She really did not have the math background for the class.

The best thing you can do is nothing, in my opinion. A letter explaining a D could cause more comical amusement than understanding sympathy.

Is this D average already set and done for the year?

i had a tough time in physics too. what specific college are u looking at? you should really talk to your teacher if u think this will make a huge diffefence

There is not one teacher in the world who would give a D to a student that they thought tried their best in the class. I don’t feel sorry for you, but good luck.

just curious did she take AP Physics B (Regular Math) or AP Physics C (Calculus)? if it’s Physics C how did she even get into the class…?

Maybe she took Calculus as a freshman or a sophomore.

that’s highly unlikely… anyways shelley14 specifically said that her daughter did not have the math background for the class, and clearly Calculus would be more than adequate for both Physics B and C.

Physics B is algebra not calc.

yea, that’s why Calculus would be “more than adequate” for Physics B. so i’m guessing your daughter was in Physics B?

I took Physics C without Calc (was in precalc at time) and I did fine in the class… Not much just integrals and differentiation.

Honestly, I was one of few juniors who took AP Physics and I had one of the top scores in the class, (most likely because half of the seniors didn’t even care for the class). I guess I was just really good at application, etc.

how hard is AP Physics compared to other AP courses?

well theres plenty of seniors that got Ds in our class

dont UCs require letters for D’s?

If your grade is on the upward trend, I would have your teacher write a letter saying that and that your end of year grade is likely to be better. (Like a B-?)

wat if i dropped to regular physics and im doing well in tha (B or higher i think, not sure though yet)

Yep, have the teacher write this for you, it can’t hurt and may help.

can i photocopy multiple copies of that letter? i have to send it to HELLA colleges

It can hurt to send a letter of explanation that doesn’t contain significant extenuating circumstances. It makes you seem like a whiner, and at best it will be ignored. Anyone who has a D grade can send a letter saying they’re trying to do better/ are doing better now.

And around here plenty of kids take Calc as freshmen or sophomores, so it wasn’t an unreasonable guess :)
