Letter from Dean of College of Arts and Sciences

<p>Today I received a letter from the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences saying how great penn is blah, blah, blah. But it says that he has "chosen to write this letter to a select group of applicants, whom you could call the “top of the top,” in order to highlight for you what disinguished Penn Arts and Sciences from our peers.</p>

<p>I got somehting a letter from Princeton that also suggested they only sent it to a select pool but everyone ended up getting. Has Penn pulled the same stunt or is this legitimate?</p>

<p>I just received the same letter, and I was wondering the same thing myself.</p>

<p>Did everyone that got into CAS receive this letter from the Dean? or just the “top of the top” ? Whatever that means. </p>

<p>i got it too. i think everyone gets it…and he DID say “top of the top” out of the applicant pool, and since we got in…well we ARE the top of the top of that haha</p>

<p>given that both penn and princeton are very concerned about their yield in this brave new world of no-ED, it makes sense they’d be pulling out all the stops. Competition is intense.</p>

<p>That being said, I’m sure whatever the letter said was right on and you should come to Penn, because it’s awesome, and whatever else she said in the letter.</p>

<p>Oh, I thought it was Bushnell. I guess she must me dean of SAS writ large?</p>

<p>Bushnell is the Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences. DeTurck is the Dean of the College.</p>

<p>Or does the School of Arts and Science include both grad and undergrad?</p>

<p>People use SAS, CAS, A&S interchangeably.</p>

<p>Makes you wish our school had a proper noun, like Wharton. I for one would like it to be named the Franklin School.</p>

<p>Or maybe the Claudia Cohen School (ugh… Logal Hall forever!)</p>

<p>^ That’s so funny. I was just talking with someone the other day and they said they wished Penn was called Franklin University.</p>

<p>They said this mainly so that Penn would not be seen as a state school or be associated with Penn State.</p>

<p>Before I die, I am going to do one of the following:</p>

<p>-Get the state of Pennsylvania to change its name. I may do this by encouraging a split into 2 new states along the powerful red/blue urban/rural divide that makes Pennsylvania politics such an intractable mess.</p>

<p>-Ideally, one of these states will be named Princeton, and TCNJ will become Princeton State</p>

<p>-I will found a school in Connecticut called Yale State, and pump up its athletic program until it overwhelms the place of Yale in the mass consciousness.</p>

<p>-Change the name of the school to Wharton University (because Franklin is already taken)</p>
