Letter Grade Transcript Concerns

My school uses letter grades instead of the standard GPA system on their transcripts (i.e. “Honors Pre-Calc A+ 1.0 creds”). Additionally, we lack class rankings.

A typical GPA system counts As and A+s both for 4.0. So, would there be any advantage for me if I achieved A+s in my classes instead of As? Could a lot of A+s in my other courses “make up” for an A- or B+ in another class?

I’m not sure you should worry about this. Some colleges recompute GPA in a uniform manner for all students. Fact is…there are high schools that don’t give + or - grades at all…just regular grades.

Your GPA will be reported on your transcript as your HS computes it to be.

Also…a B+ is not a bad grade…just FYI.

I also do not think that you should worry about this. Different high schools in the US compute GPA in wildly different ways. There is also quite a wide range in terms of how grades are assigned. Some other countries might be more consistent within the country (or at least within provinces or states), but between different countries there are again wide differences in grading.

University admissions seems to be pretty good at adjusting for this.

Also, some students are consistently strong across subjects. Some students have very strong strengths in some subjects and are not as good at other subjects (I was in this category). There are many different colleges and universities and you should be able to find some that are a good fit for you.
