Say my uncle was the governor of a fairly large state. Would it be beneficial or detrimental to my app to include a supplementary letter of rec from him? He knows me fairly well, but I’m not sure he could offer any “new perspectives” on me. Thoughts?

It depends on what you’re going for.

For example, in Columbia’s Admissions PDF, they clearly specify that your recommendations must be from teachers that have taught you in some academic subject.

Some state schools have applications that ask for a “teacher” recommendation. Some may not even specify.

Best bet: contact the admissions officers.

Dude, your uncle’s the freaking governor. Just tell him to call the admissions people and you’re in.

These kinds of letters (from the rich and famous) often backfire at elite schools, as they are a sign of undue/unfair influence. They probably help at big state schools, especially the state where he’s the Governor!

“Say my uncle was the governor of a fairly large state.” I love how you phrased this. Hysterical.
