One of my past Arabic language professors now works at X graduate university where I am now applying to for International Studies. Would be it be advantageous to get a letter of rec. from him or would it be considered overkill on my grad. apps by the admissions board? Thanks guys.

It would be advantageous under the following circumstances:

If you want to work with this professor and he supports your application.

If the adcom knows and trusts this professor, and if he speaks highly of you.

If it’s one of your three strongest potential letters, regardless of whether or not the professor is otherwise connected to your target program.

That being said, there’s no inherent advantage to getting a letter from a professor at the same university. If the people reading your application don’t know this professor personally, it’s just like any other letter from a stranger.

All highly relevant points made. I will have to reevaluate my LOR submissions!
