Letter of Recommendation From Superintendent

Through my obligations as a student journalist, I have worked closely with my district’s superintendent throughout the past year. I have accompanied him to our state capitol for school funding legislative sessions, conducted numerous interviews, and communicated with him outside of typical administration hours. Two weeks ago, however, he was appointed the superintendent of a district two hours south of where I currently go to school. He will pretty much be leaving only a few days after our semester ends. I NEED a letter of recommendation for J-school from this guy.

How do I approach him in the next week about writing one for me without disregarding the insanely hectic schedule of his final days? Thanks a lot.

I don’t think there is any need to contact him in the next few days. Send him an email anywhere from now until the last weeks of the summer asking him for a recommendation. Make sure to express your appreciation and gratefulness and that should be enough. It’s better to catch someone like this when they’re not all stressed out or super busy.

First, send him a nice congratulatory note on his new job, and expressing appreciation for the opportunities you had to work closely with him.

Later in the summer, ask him for a letter of recommendation.

REadysetgo is right: Now isn’t the time to ask him for the letter because he’d be too stressed out.
