Letter of Recommendation/Teacher Evaluation Question

USC website says to send them

“Counselor/Teacher Report, with attached letter of recommendation (may be sent separately).”

Okay I’m a bit confused. As far as I understand I need (1) report and (1) letter which can be from either my counselor, teacher, or both.

At first, I thought my teacher could write me a letter and my counselor would just fill out the evaluation form. However, my counselor told me that she HAD to write a letter of recommendation. She says this because of the sixth item on the evaluation form…

“We are especially interested in knowing the characteristics of this student that distinguish him or her from other candidates nationwide who are seeking college entrance.
Please use a separate sheet to submit your comments.”

Is this “separate sheet to submit your comments” the same thing as a letter of recommendation? If so, does that mean I need two letters of recommendation?

As of now I have LOR and an Evaluation from my teacher, and a LOR and Evaluation from my Counselor. My teacher’s work is superb and personal, but my counselors…not so much because I don’t know her well. I’d prefer to send only my teacher’s LOR/Evaluation but I’m concerned about that “separate sheet to submit your comments” and how many letters I really need. Someone PLEASE shed some light on the subject. Thanks.

You can have EITHER a teacher or counselor fill in the form and write the letter of recommendation. With this in mind, I suggest you chose the recommendation that is best.

USC only requires one letter of recommendation, and it can be from a counselor OR a teacher. It would be fine to send only your teacher’s recommendation. Be sure to be very nice to your counselor about it and thank her, and just explain that USC only requires one and your teacher already sent one out…

Good luck!

thank you both for your responses. I’m still unsure about the “separate sheet for comments” part which is one of the questions on the form. Is this the same as the essay? My teacher didn’t even mention it, just gave me the letter of rec. and evaluation form. Counselor gave me the form, AND a letter of recommendation (in response to the separate sheet for comments" question).

The “separate sheet for comments” is the letter of recommendation. Just attach it to the evaluation form and seal it in an envelope (theoretically, the teacher would seal it, but many teachers want you to see the rec and give it to you unsealed). You have everything you need.
