Letter Requesting First Semester Senior Grades Means Borderline?

Today, I received a letter saying that they have completed a preliminary review of my application and are requesting first semester grades before taking final action on my application. Does this mean that I am borderline?

No, it means you have applied for admission and they are considering your application. All applicants are expected to submit mid-year grades, though some will not receive a letter. Letters will continue to arrive through February.

In post#13 here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-southern-california/1289878-no-request-mid-year-report-mediocre-first-sem-grades.html</a> BigTexDad went to the trouble to gather anecdotal information from college confidential posts that may help you.

Thanks for that information. I’m still a bit confused. Why would some not receive a letter asking for grades? The way they write it makes it seem like they selected some people to be sent letters (preliminary review?).

To respond to BigTexDad’s info, that doesn’t really say anything. It’s a very small sample size and the students who didn’t respond could have just as easily been accepted as rejected.

Some have already submitted their grades, some letters may get lost in the mail… many reasons.

“Preliminary” does not means “some,” it means “before” or “first.”

Yes, BigTexDad points that out, and then goes on to point out that the % reporting acceptances matches the overall acceptance %. So at worst, those asked for grades are being accepted at the overall acceptance rate.

Yeah I know what preliminary means, I just meant that if they mentioned having a preliminary review, it sounds like they are trying to say they eliminated some people in this review. I guess I’m wrong though.

Please note that people who are rejected are far less likely to post that fact to CC. For example, a look at the USC FAll 2011 STATS ONLY DECISIONS thread shows 127 accepted and 11 rejected.
