Letters and Sciences??

Hi I applied to UMaryland, a little later than most (January) for Biological Sciences: Physiology and Neurobiology. I was accepted to the school but was given the major Letters and Sciences. I’m not exactly too sure what it means, but its basically like getting accepted to the school but waitlisted for the program. You take 45 credits related to the program then re apply.

My Stats to summarize were:

SAT I (breakdown): 2090 (710W 640R 740M)
ACT: 32 (35E, 34M, 27R, 31S)
SAT II: 790 Math 2, 690 Chem
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.71 @ top 30 hs in country
Senior Year Course Load: AP Chemistry, Linear Algebra & Differential Equations, World Lit 2, IB Spanish 5 SL, Engineering Design & Development

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Internship w/ Orthopedic Surgeon, Battlebots Board member & Participant, President of club aimed to help autistic children, Freshman and Sophomore Soccer, National Honor Society, Internship at Private Pharmacy, Treasurer of SouthAsian Club, VP of World Hunger Club, Member of Peer-leadership Program
Job/Work Experience: Teacher’s Assistant for Summer Classes K-8

Volunteer/Community service: Hospital Volunteer (Radiology Department, Laboratory Department), Helped set up Pancreatic Cancer Walk Fundraiser, Helped organize and direct school dance for kids & adults with disabilities, camp counselor at summer camp for kids & adults with disabilities

Not to sound stubborn but was I placed in Letters and Sciences cause of my tardy application or was I really just an average applicant or something? Thanks.

Hey, I’m somewhat in the same situation as you. I also applied for the Biological Sciences Major but was placed in L&S. I applied Early Action, so I assume I wasn’t good enough for this LEP; if I go to Maryland, I’ll have to take some courses before re-applying for Biology as well. Since you applied regular decision, I’m assuming that you just didn’t apply early enough. All the program spots for the freshman class were probably already filled by EA applicants by then, so you may have had a better chance of getting into the program if you had done Priority (which is why it’s called priority; because the colleges give those students a priority look-over).

However, I did get into the Scholars Life Sciences program at UMCP despite not getting into the Biology major program. Are you planning on going to Maryland anyway? I’m not sure which one’s better: being in L&S at UMCP vs. being in Biology at UMBC. I didn’t get into the Meyerhoff or Honors Program at UMBC, though, which bums me out… If anyone has advice, please check out my thread at UMBC’s CC forum board.

I’m not sure how it works, but if it makes you feel better, my son got into the Meyerhoff program at UMBC, but didn’t get into Chemistry at UMD (he was also put in letters and sciences). I’m not sure what the deal was as he submitted his application by the November 1st early decision deadline.
