Letters from Schools

How did they phrase their decisions?

Post your decision letters for future reference

Hotchkiss:
It was something along the lines of congratulations you are accepted as a boarder lower upper junior senior for the class of -----. We hope you accept our offer to come to Hotchkiss and hope to see you on revisit day.

Hill: Congrats! We really want you to revisit and come to our school and become a part of the Hill family. We hope to seen you soon. (Don’t know if its protocol but then received a call from the headmaster congratulating me and saying he hopes to see me at revisit day and he hopes that I choose Hill) very nice people.

Bump…

Woodberry: At midnight: Congratulations on your acceptance for the middle third second former year ----. We feel that your talents will add a positive influence to the school. We hope that you choose our school and join our community. Go TIGERS!!!

Episcopal: Big box with Congratulations and fireworks in it. We accepted you because of your special talents. Share them with us! We hope that you choose us and we hope to see you on re-visit day… Then there was a video that said basically make this place your home and come join us with the Phillip Phillips song Home as the background music.

Mercersburg: Congratulations on your acceptance. We feel that your talents are a perfect fit with our school. We hope you choose us. Schedule a re-visit date. I then called an AO at 12:04 am on march 10th and had a lengthy discussion.

At Exeter it was actually a video of welcome (very fun–made my son laugh) and then the official email several minutes later-- that seemed rather unnecessary to my son–who when he saw the second email thought for a second that maybe the first was a mistake and that he hadn’t gotten accepted until he opened that one too.

NORTHFIELD MOUNT HERMON:

Congratulations! On behalf of the admission committee at Northfield Mount Hermon. I am pleased to offer you admission to the eleventh grade as a boarding student for the 2013-14 academic year.

The selection process was competitive with more than 1,600 applications. Members of the admission committee were impressed with your talents and achievments, and they believe you will thrive at NMH

-MYNAME- Be sure to check your email for a special “newsflash” to enjoy and share.

With congratulations,

The Admission Office Staff.

St.Marks sent a video, which took a while to arrive, but it was really funny, ending with all the students clapping for you!

Northfield Mount Hermon sent a special news flash thing, which was cute:)

Andover sent a package, which FedEx said they found, but it hasn’t come yet…

BUA sent a gift wrapped (in BUA red and stickers) copy of the Iliad and a letter that was partially in Latin and was personalized.

@etondad what is BUA?

Congratulations, @etondad! I hope to see your child on one of the upcoming revisit days!

@confusedonhades: BUA is short for Boston University Academy, a small day school on Boston University’s campus with a Classical-based curriculum and a close-knit community. [Boston University Academy | Boston University](<a href=“Boston’s Best Private High School for Curious + Kind Students | Boston University Academy”>Boston’s Best Private High School for Curious + Kind Students | Boston University Academy)

Ooops-- I didn’t unwrap it-- just saw the top and knew it was the Fagle’s translation of Homer-- It was the Odyssey–my son would just roll his eyes at me!

He has narrowed things to Exeter if boarding, BUA if day–both great schools, We are delighted, he can’t go wrong.

@etondad no sir great choices. You can’t go wrong with either. Congrats

Permafrosts thank you!
Andover’s rejection letter was nice. Said just too many applicants and too few spots. I knew I wasn’t attending there but it was still a nicely written letter.

Andover’s waitlist letter was really understanding! I thought it was going to be like Hotchkiss’s, which was worded very monotonously. However, Andover pleasantly surprised me, acknowledging that yes, being on the waitlist is frustrating. Then, they proceeded to ask me if I wanted to stay on the waitlist or not.

I think I’ll take myself off of Andover’s waitlist-and come to think of it, Hotchkiss’s as well. :)

Portsmouth Abbey won prize - Fri - nice email. Sat- priority mail - Abbey T shirt, sticker, handwritten letters from three separate people, and an awesome video of tons of kids saying “congratulations!”. AO called Monday to congratulate but we had to break the news that he is going to Tabor.

Tabor - very personal letter that highlighted what they liked about our kid, handwritten note on side from interviewer, nice folder, sticker. Then, email with awesome photo montage with “I’m On Top of the World” song.

Oh – St Georges wait list letter - colder than a rejection. Brooks wait list letter - generic but not as insulting as St G’s.

In terms of acceptance letters, Choate was just fine! First, an encouraging, though slightly generic, decision letter. Then, an e-mail was sent to me, directing me to Choate Connect. That’s a social networking site for all admitted applicants (though, still have to debate with parents about getting one-they think that all social networking sites are evil). And now an acceptance package! :)

Both my C’s acceptance letters were very nice. SMS letter had a handwritten note from the admissions director welcoming my child. They also emailed a link to a fun welcoming video.

CA’s letter was very personalized, highlighting several things about C that impressed them most. This topped off what I thought was an amazing job by the CA interviewer in connecting with my kid. My husband and I chatted with her after her 30 minute interview with our child, and could not believe how much she got out of this kid in so little time. My past career involved a lot of interviewing, so I know how challenging it can be to get the gist of a person in a half hour. But the CA interviewer did it - like no one I’ve ever seen.

Thanks Ace. We are delighted for him-- we have mixed feelings–he is leaning toward Exeter and we can’t blame him, his sibs went to boarding school (eton and exeter) and he knows the opportunities there but we aren’t ready to let him go and be empty nesters, esp when he has a great day school–but that is selfish of us–so it is completely his call.

Anyone else having to deal with what we have been calling the “premature empty nest syndrome”?
