D is a junior, out of state, GPA 4.1 uw soph and junior yrs. All honors - 5 APs. Decent ECs. Will take SAT next week. PSAT not great (1864.)

Her strongest component will be teacher recs. She’s got three teachers who taught her as a freshman and now as a junior and have marveled at her growth.

Any problem with submitting three teacher recs? They will be in English, Social Studies and Spanish. (Ironically, her strongest subject is math.) How important are these rec letters to admissions officers? And should she have a science/math and humanties rec? Or does none of this matter one bit?

Does she have a shot at UMD in general?

Thanks!

If she tries harder on the SAT’s then i think your D has a good shot here. In regards to the Teacher Recs. just send two, thats really all they need. I once called them up asking if i should send more, but it seemed they would be more annoyed by it, so it might not be as benefical. These letters are very important espically, even more, to students who lack in certain areas, your D’s SAT’s in this case. Personally, i would have one Rec from the Math teacher and one S.S./Humanities teacher. However, go with the teachers that you know can give the best info about your D. If the Math teacher is not good at writing teacher Rec’s then its maybe not a good choice to go after her. Also note that T.Recs should come from teahers from sophmore and junior years. Overall, i think your D has a chance but UMDCP has become very competitive over the years, and even more with your D bieng out of state. For some reason we keep getting people from NY and NJ here, god i hate them. All they do is babble about how awsome NY is to MD, F them. Anyways good luck :)

i totally agree with the above. just make the recs from people who really know you. my one teacher rec was from my french teacher who i had been with for 3 years (freshman, junior, senior). i’m sure those teachers should be fine since they taught her junior year. i only turned in one rec but i got an excellent offer from maryland. i think the essay component is also vital. i didn’t have high SATs but my recommendation and essay were very unique.
