Letters of Recommendation

Many law schools require 3 letters of reference, and being a relatively large university, it’s very difficult to sustain relationship with professors if you don’t take classes with them. How well do professors who write reference letter for student usually know them? Taught them for a year? Two, maybe?

i.e. If I took a course in junior year with a professor and he knows me rather well, could I ask him at the start of senior year for a reference letter? I know I could, but would it be advisable? Should I have taken at least two years worth of courses with someone before asking them to write something like this?

LORs are often (usually, even) based on a single semester’s class.
