letters?

did anyone else get letters in the mail saying they really liked your application and think there’s a good chance of you getting in?
is this a good thing, or do they just send it to everyone so they won’t write off rice after all the state school decisions come out?
and if it is a good thing, does anyone know how good your chances of getting in are? like i know wellesley has one expressly for early evaluation, and 90% of those who get the letters get in, but i dont think rice actually has that kind of system.

thanks!

i think you 've received a likely letter, which means you are probably in, and they want you to choose them. its sort of a bargaining chip. although i didnt know that rice sent them out, like duke apparently does.

well, i got one dated 2/13, and it said:

“While the admission committee won’t meet to make final decisions until the end of March, I feel you would be a strong match for Rice. Based on your application, it is likely that you will be successful in gaining admission to the university.”

I just wondered if this is something they send to loads of people who dont end up getting in in the end, or if it actually means something.

Thanks!

^Wow! That is definitely a likely letter!

inthemistylight, my son received one letter exactly like yours.

First para says:
After reading your application for admission, the first reader was so excited she passed it on to me to read. ----

Last para says:
Thank you for your interest in Rice! I look forward to sending you your admission decision letter in late March.
Sincerely,

Keith Todd
Director of Admission

Stats anyone?

I think you probably will be offered admission and they are trying to give you the “heads up” so you have a bit more time to do your research and perhaps pay a visit to campus if you have not been yet.

I would appreciate getting this type of letter as there just isn’t enough time in April if you get a couple of admissions and you may need to plan some long distance visits to before making your final choice.

I received the same likely letter on Friday.

I’m a white, American, regular-decision applicant. The last paragraph invites the recipient to attend the “Owl Days” for accepted students.

Do they send many of these letters out? It is a very good sign, or is it something almost routine?

congrats to those who got the letters. It’s a very good sign and they definitely do NOT send them to everyone.

If you don’t get one, are you most likely not going to be accepted?

Soooo excited! My first acceptance (most likely)!

Not getting invited to Vision doesn’t mean you won’t get accepted. Vision was only for a few prospective minorities, I think most people actually didn’t get invited so don’t worry.

it was a blast, though :)

Full text of letter:

yeah, thats pretty much what my letter said.

but pedrossi: i dont think it has anything to do w/ any “visions.” the word never appears in the letter, i dont think. it just mentions “owl days”

and thanks for everyone’s input!

Pedrossi, we are Asian Indian, not minority.

To Alumother,

Waiting for Rice/Baylor interview news.
Rejected from Stanford EA.

You got rejected from Stanford. Wow. Your stats are sick.

Those who got the Likely letters, did you receive any other likely letters or advance notification from any other schools?

to wemel: don’t worry if you didn’t get the letter. You still have a chance of getting in. Rice (and schools in general) only send a few of these likely letters out to outstanding applicants. But there are still many spots open for other applicants.

how likely is it to get merit money without a LL

Navidad, why would your son retake a 2340 and a 35?
