Liars getting into ivy-league/stanford/duke/MIT...

I’ll get straight to business because I am fuming… I am a chinese high school student and I got into MIT, Yale and Princeton. My dream colleges were MIT and Stanford. I was rejected at Stanford. I had made peace with my decisions (and I am choosing MIT!), but then I somehow got access to the application of a few people who were accepted to Stanford, Yale, Harvard, MIT… To my absolute horror, they had lied blatantly on their applications. Faking ‘national awards’ (I am awed by their balls), buying research papers because their dad can. Claiming ECs they never did, saying that they raised almost 20k dollars in our community, which they never ever did. The list is endless. Their application is full of significant lies which definitely impacted decisions. One guy claimed he had topped an exam taken by 40k people, which is not true as she wasnt the rank 1. Hell, she wasn’t in the top 50%. They have bloated grades, exaggerated ECs. The list is endless. I am absolutely sure about all this because I have access to their common apps and know them well

I want to do something about it… I want to give these people what they deserve. They deserve to have their acceptances rescinded. They should be blacklisted at all the colleges. They don’t deserve anything they have.
No, this isn’t sour grapes. I already have one of my top 2 colleges, but what pains me is they took a spot of a deserving student…
please don’t tell me I shouldn’t screw them over. I want to, and I will. I just want to know the best way to do so, and what would you do if you were in my shoes.
ty for reading. …
rant over…

How the hell do you have “access” to their applications?

Um, how do you have access to their common apps? And how would grades be “bloated”? Aren’t they on their transcripts? As for the other stuff, what proof do you have?

I was in my computer lab and was browsing the computer. Just then I found the applications of those people, saved prolly by the GC. Grades are bloated by schoo cuz they bribed the principal… As for proof, I have links to chinese govt’s website and clear lies like saying 'they have 12000 followers on blog when they dont have any. This is also public info.

Why don’t you just mind your own business and let them live with whatever guilt they have? If they honestly feel no guilt just take solace in the fact that you’re a more mature person than they are and that you didn’t have to cheat your way to get into a top college.

Getting revenge is pretty juvenile at best, and spiteful and a huge overreaction at worst. Life isn’t always fair. Get over yourself and your vigilante justice. And honestly, what if they’re innocent and you cause their acceptances to be rescinded?

Why would the guidance counselor save applications on a public computer?

None of this makes sense. Get over it and grow up.

As I said, I won’t let them go.
If they are honest, they have nothing to fear. I doubt that girl who claims to have topped XYZ exam and who isn’t in the toppers list on the website is honest.

and as far as GC is conencerd, idk why. but there was this folder and I opened it.

So you wanna know how to screw them over, eh? This method was discussed briefly in a former thread about someone complaining about kids lying on their applications.

I recommend anonymously tipping off admissions with a note suggesting that they verify the applicants that were admitted at your school, particularly in the “hot” ECs that may have had a large impact on their decisions. It would help more if you have support from a faculty member at your school, such as a counselor.

I agree, this kind of stuff is unacceptable and fails to produce an authentic freshman class.

also, idk about you guys, but I was always taught if something is not right, make it.
I can also give links which prove their lies, but it would undermine my and their anonymity.
I find it funny that there are people asking me to mind my business. I’d think you do the same when you see a guy getting bullied.

Your thread does not sound right. Report to the universities if you have hard evidence. What you said does not make sense at all.

You just made an account to rant here on CC, which understandably reflects your rage towards the dishonest applicants.

I was rejected by the schools that they were admitted to – and I have done everything honest on my part.

The fact is, you will be risking exposing yourself even to the colleges you were admitted to. There will be people who will do whatever means necessary - without any ethical deliberations - to achieve their goals. I have come to accept my peers who have blatantly cheated on their standardized tests, not as my friends, but as examples to distance myself.

I can feel the pain, because I do too. But there will come a point in their lives where cheating is no longer tolerated, and the consequences will be much more severe than simple college admission rescindance. Focus on your future, not their fraudulence.

@billcsho: I am actually going to report it to the universities on Monday, both by calling and emailing. I want to know others’ opinion and any way I can screw them even more. Yes, this is sadistic. But that’s how I am. You don’t know the pain when you toil day and night and fail to those who cheat.

I don’t agree with minding your own business. If you saw someone stealing , you should report it. This is basically the same thing.

PS Copy those folders before you tell anyone. If GC and Principal are corrupt, they should lose their jobs.

IF, and only IF, you are ABSOLUTELY certain that you can prove these people are lying, then you should do something. I don’t really know what, though, like who to tell.

Okay, I can see what most of ya’ll are thinking when you’re asking the OP to mind his (her?) own business. However, although this incident probably had no effect on the OP–seeing as he was admitted to several top schools–the students who lied still took away spots from other truthful and more deserving applicants. And even worse, those students who were next in line for their spits don’t even know this. The OP has every right to be angry.

I am as sure as you are when you say you are alive.

ihatefrauds - I think many American universities are aware of high levels of cheating in some overseas communities. If the corruption goes all the way to the top at your school - and, potentially, your entire community - you do risk having your efforts backfire. The administrators are likely to accuse you of falsehoods and point out that you unlawfully accessed confidential records. Perhaps you can tip off the colleges anonymously. Otherwise, you could Google articles on the topic of cheating in China, and contact one of the American journalists who has written about the subject with your information. One reason that it has become so difficult for students from China, India, and elsewhere to gain admission into American universities is the suspicion that their academic credentials might have been inflated (that is just one of many reasons, of course). I hate frauds, also. Everybody does, but just be sure that you will not be the only one punished should you decide to take action.

You can send detailed anonymous letters to the schools about these things if you so please. The schools, if so interested can check it out.

Unlikely, that those thin 3 dozengs made a whole lot of difference in their accepts, by the way. These schools have lists of the finalists and such of those awards that mean anything to them. It could have gotten them a point or two bump up on their ECs. However, it’s easy to look up these awards, if they are not puny things not worth reasearching and it does turn out they are lying, they could get called on the carpet for lying on apps.

What your info may get the colleges to do is to double check some of the claims by those fraudsters. If indeed, super high level competitions and awards were claimed, they can be easily verified.
